apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Tomorrow: The 6th Annual Apartment Therapy Island Walk

This Sunday, November 8th, we're hosting our sixth annual walk of the island. Unlike the previous five years, our walk this year is going to walk that bit of Long Island known as Brooklyn, as we'll start at Coney Island and walk all the way to our regular finishing point, Battery Park (ah, the Brooklyn Bridge is going to be marvelous)...

Last year's walk with slideshow (it's the whole journey in about 80 pics)

While Apartment Therapy is devoted to good homes and good design, our walk celebrates the fact that we all live next to one another and reminds us that we are a city of neighborhoods and people that all have tremendous potential to help one another. Don't you want to stretch your legs and see it all?

Each year that we've done this it is unforgettable, healthy and community building. This year is even bigger and we're inviting you all to join in and bring your friends.

We start at Nathan's Hot Dog Stand right on Surf Avenue and then we're going to try taking Coney Island Avenue all the way to Flatbush before we hit Manhattan. Got a better route, please let me know your tips below in the comments.

Start: 9am at Nathan's near the Boardwalk (Subway: Stillwell and Surf Avenue on the D,F,N or Q)

Coming from downtown Manhattan? We start at 8am at Grey Dog Coffee on Carmine Street and walk over to the West 4th Street Subway.

Feel free to meet us there.

Want to find us on the road and join us in the middle? Call us: 917.509.6841. We're mobile but we do move fast.

See you all soon!

Best, Maxwell

PS. Raindate??? If it's really awful we'll post a raindate to the site by 7:00am that morning.

PS. Not in NYC?

Why don't you choose two great "across town" points to walk across your city this weekend? It's the easiest form of entertainment I've ever encountered.

So glad you're doing a different route! But so sorry we can't join you. : - (

We will be at Ikea for the better part of the day, making final decisions and plunking down the money for redoing our kitchen in CT -- a journey of a different sort. But we do hope to share images and stories with all of you!

Sounds like fun!

Instead of Coney Island Ave, you might consider walking up Ocean Parkway instead, at least part of the way. It's a little wider, a little less gritty, and it's got a nice walking path. You'll find a lot of Brooklyinites there, hanging out and strolling.

KLT108 - thanks for the tip. That sounds like a good idea.

I second Ocean Parkway -- it's a lovely street.

Ocean Pkw! And if you're lucky you'll get to see some of the green parrots that live there. I hope I'll be able to join you at some point (8am is too early for me)

I'm signed up and looking forward to a long walk. Last year, the meeting place (225th St) was quite near where I live, this year, I've got a heck of a commute!

I agree, Ocean Parkway would be a much nicer walk. Walk up Ocean, right on Church, left on Coney island avenue, go straight until you hit prospect park. Walk through the park and you can pick up flatbush at Grand Army Plaza. Sounds like a lovely walk.

I think yepella's route is perfect. Ocean Pkwy is tree lined and beautiful this time of year. For those of you who are not into hot dogs for breakfast, there's a great small farmers market a block away, just outside the Cyclone's stadium. You can stock up on some apples and pears for the big walk. enjoy!

Don't walk Coney Island Ave!! It sucks!! Ocean Parkway is MUCH better for pedestrians - they have a whole long sidewalk between the main street adn the side street - it's BUILT for pedestrians. Once you get down to Cortelyou or Church, you can cut over (not far) back to Coney Island up to Flatbush. Trust me! I live right between these two streets, and Ocean Parkway is the way to go.

Last year, I missed the grp walk by half an hour but made it to 225th street and walked all by myself and took tons of photos.

I wish I knew this in advance, I just invited 15 ppl for brunch to my place...

Sounds like a great walk..Enjoy!

PS: Max & Sara Kate, it was great seeing you guys with Ursula on Halloween...

Hi! i'm very excited to join the walk this year!
I agree with the Ocean Parkway sentiments but suggest cutting across Cortelyou and down Westminster and Albemarle to see some of the Flatbush mansions in Ditmas Park before heading into Prosp. Park.

A much better sight than the $1 stores on some surrounding streets, but I'm just happy to be along for the ride, I mean walk!!

YAY! Evie and I will be there! (She was 2 last time we did it in 06!) Hmmm... she is too big for a stroller now, so we'll see how it goes, that's a looooong walk for a 5 year old!

Do you plan the walk the same time every year? I would love to attend next year - I think it would be a great way for me to learn the city!
