New Yorkers, soon you'll be able to stop wasting your data plan when you're on the go. Free super fast public wifi program LinkNYC began its rollout this week, and will have 4,500 kiosks around the city within the next four years.

The first kiosks went up at former payphones on Third Avenue at East 15th Street and East 17th Street on Tuesday. In the next few weeks, they and eight more on Third Ave will start pumping out gigabit speed wifi within 150 feet, which is 20 to 50 times faster than home broadband service, and 100 times faster than average public wifi.

In February, the kiosks will get tablets enabling free phone calls within the US and web browsing. By June, there will be 500 kiosks around New York.
