We've blogged about our love for the Hammam towels from Toast, but we've finally uncovered an online source that doesn't involve international shipping. Usually, we go for more fluffy towels, but these look like the perfect thing for summer. This towel is handmade in Tunisia in 100% pure cotton, woven on "metiers a tisser" the same way it used to be a thousand years ago, with handmade fringed edges. We love its versatility. It can be used as a towel to wrap yourself, a sarong, a sofa throw or even as a table runner. Another plus is that it incorporate our other current obsession — stripes!

I have been using nice tea towels as hand towels in my bathroom for years, because plush hand towels don't get dry between uses. Plus you can find tea towels in really nice colors and patterns.
I brought back several--but not nearly enough!--of these when I was in Istanbul a couple of weeks ago. They're great multi-taskers: decorative bed linens, tablecloths, picnic blankets, beach and bath towels, beach cover-ups, throws, etc. I've been scouring sources ever since I got home to purchase more.
It is funny that this subject was brought up cause I was just talking to a friend about it. But my story is a little different, I am turkish and every year I visit my family in Istanbul. This time I promised myself that I will get rid of all my towels and would get new ones in Istanbul but OMG the prices were skyrocket and plus the airline would charge me for the extra luggage. So I came back to NY with a great sadness. But one trip to Marshalls changed all that.. They had the turkish towels I wanted and price range from 3.99 to 5.99 with all the colors I wanted. I grabbed them all and now a happy camper... Gotta love the Marshalls!
I have ordered from a company in Portland called Indigo Traders. They have a website but not an online store. I bought three beautiful towels in natural white with blue stripes, silver stripes and gold stripes. The owner was very nice. I described what I was looking for and he made a recommendation. I think I paid around $75 for three with shipping.
These are also know as Pestemal Bath Towels and you can find them here:
