White Enamel Flatwa...
I was surprised, too, because it goes very well with most other colors. It seems there's a yellow for any palette.
Lighting is key when working with yellow. I think it is an awesome color when there is enough natural light available and the right accent lighting is in the room. Using a "cleanable" paint is a good idea as well. My sister's room was yellow when we were kids. Aged, dirty, years of abuse yellow is really gross.
In my experience the men I have known do not like yellow so it was never an option.
That particular pair of dogs sitting in that way still makes me laugh.
I painted the kitchen/entrance/library and sleeping loft in my RV a cheerful yellow (http://travelswithmiranda.uskeba.ca/?p=10973). It's bright, but it makes me smile. I toned down the colour by using dark green, dark rose, and a hint of chocolate brown as the accent colours.
Agreed, that dogs photo is hilarious.
I don't think I could do a whole room of bright yellow--it's the color of madness for a reason--but as an accent in a soft, white room (as in photo 4), it works beautifully. Also, in a darker, north-facing room it can really cheer things up.
Love yellow...and love how gutsy these home owners were!
I'm not a fan of yellow, but recently decided to go for it. We bought a can of bumble bee yellow and started painting our new room.
Well, it just wouldn't go on properly. We had primed the room but there were splotches everywhere. Apparently, according to the guy at the paint store, yellow doesn't do well on new sheetrock - even if primed. So our room ended up grey - like the rest of our house.

Don't forget the Monticello Yellow makeover of Thomas Jefferson's dining room, which is AMAZING:

We just bought a house with a yellow accent wall - I HATE it and can't wait for the time to paint over it.
I like yellow, in small doses with lots of white. Like my master bathroom here: http://styleingwithchildren.blogspot.com/2011/10/bathroom-progress-finishing-touches.html
lots of white and a bit of glue/gray make yellow a VERY happy colour.
Great link about Monticello, tequila red! So inspiring-- and the yellow totally kicks that insipid blue's butt. I call shenanigans on the survey that concludes blue is the world's most popular color. Let's have some notes on methodology please!
Yellow is a very traditional colour, and was very popular in the '90s, so it is not surprising that the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction.
Also, it is not a colour which marries naturally with MCM furniture (which tends to go with cooler colours better), so again, not surprising.
Just love those two pups btw -- cannot stop myself from saying that!
We had a bright yellow (like photo 2) basement in our old house. Lots of white trim including closet doors and ceiling, and brownish berber carpeting -- it was like living in a slice of lemon meringue pie! (But we did like it!) We learned not to paint a narrow space like a stairwell or lavatory that color, though -- the reflected color is scarey!
Just finished the renovation of the main floor ofthe library where I work, and the primary color of the walls is BM Sundial, a very pale golden yellow (close to an off-white.) We used a couple of shades of white (BM Sugar Cookie and Cameo White) for trim, and a few accent areas in Prescott Green, Wythe Blue, and (for a brick fireplace wall) Georgian Brick.
People can't get over how much brighter and happier the space feels after 20 years of pale fog gray! (16-20 foot ceilings and tall windows help, of course!)
Yellow is great if used carefully.
We have two rooms facing North and Northeast. They were unfortunately cave-like, until yellow was slopped onto the walls. If you pair it with clean lines of blues, black and green (in addition to white and brown architectural details), it cuts down the psycho factor. Monticello and Monet's house really convinced us on yellow!
I painted my bedroom deep blue to create a calming, romantic atmosphere, but the best color in my home is our super vivid yellow in the living room. It gives us energy and warmth when the Sun isn't around for half of the year here in Seattle.
A huge problem is if ding a good yellow paint. i wanted an orangy egg yoke yellow but nothing was remotely close. Interesting that the bright yellow accent wall is Dutch.
If you start looking at paint, you will be surprised by what is described as yellow - beiges, golds, all sorts of colors.
Yellow may well be my favourite colour! My (mostly purple) room has a yellow feature wall and a lot of yellow accents, our family room is yellow (connecting to the kitchen, with blue tiles and a Caeserstone benchtop), and our exterior walls are yellow.
