These Maine houses, photographed beautifully by Keliy Anderson-Staley may not represent high end design, but they are still incredibly inspiring — they are all homes to families living off the grid without electricity (except what is generated by the sun), plumbing or phones.
The artist herself grew up in one of these cabins in Maine and the images document a radically different (at least to us city dwellers) way of life, but one that isn't without its charms. I've certainly dreamed, from time to time, of packing it all up and leaving the modern world for awhile. Anderson-Staley's photographs lovingly portray these families for whom, she says in her statement, “their home is their masterpiece.”

Lovely!
This home is like the sort of homes I used to fantasize about building as a kid, when I dreamed of being lost at sea and landing on my own island and being forced to build/decorate an awesome shelter out of sticks and leafs whilst I waited for my search party to come a knocking. It was an unrealistic dream then, but me living in this house without the back story of being lost at sea etc.. nowadays is even more unrealistic. But good for you for being super green.
No generators?
Such serenity translated in the pictures. Beautiful. My parents both (separately) live off the grid (but with cell phone service, solar, and wells) and I admire the determination it takes to create such a peaceful, green life; Although with kids I'm not sure I would want to do it- I love taking my kids to the park, to play with other kids, for cultural and art activities, daily.
This way of life sounds like a dreamy way to decompress and perhaps should be a mandatory type of vacation for all city dwellers at some point in life (even if only for a month) to remember to slow down. I sure come out of visiting my parents moving at a slower, more centered pace, with an appreciation for simple pleasures and cadences.
yes, very serene and peaceful. would be great to grow up in one of these off the grid spaces.
I'm a huge fan of Keliy's work, thanks for the tip on Ahorn mag.
