I think a home office can be either a very calm and serene environment — or it can end up looking cluttered and too much like a corporate space. Even business centers are now quite savvy in design and feng shui. I suppose my biggest challenge in office/desk space would be storage and shelving. What do I want to display? How do I provide proper storage, without over crowding the desk or wall? As a photographer, I hope to combine a photo studio and my office into one inspiration.
What are your Home Office and Studio suggestions?

I think to someone who likes minimalism, there is no such thing as "too minimalist."
It is totally a matter of personal preference - how much stuff you want around. Even to the point of looking bad - as some people are looking for home offices to be functional for them, and not something that needs to look good. I like a balance - but that can be hard to achieve sometimes.
Similarly, to someone who likes books, there is no such thing as "too many shelves."
Forget the shelves. I need info on the desk set up in the first photo.
If the items on the shelf are purely decorative, and especially if they were things you bought to put on that shelf, the shelf is unnecessary.
I don't know about shelves, but that first picture is definitely a little heavy on bright yellow stripes and vases for my taste.
Well said, lepidoptery.
I love those Eames shell chairs.
@lepidoptery, Agreed. As few hanging shelves as possible should be used, and only for necessities, because they're not pretty, merely utilitarian. I can say that because I have a wall of them over each of the two work stations in my own 10'X10' home office. A third wall holds a free-standing Container Store Skandia custom shelving and drawers unit.
Aside from a few small unusual art prints on bits of bare wall, the office contents are modern and functional. I use pale wood shelves and office supplies containers made of natural materials. The window on the fourth wall has a refreshing view of the garden.
There's no use trying to make it homey since it's full of computer things, so I aim just for clean, calm, and organized. It's also my husband's hobby digital art studio. He insists on white walls. We had more arguments about this room than any other. Happily, for the last few years we've both liked our office.
the chairs are knoll not eames
I love shelves
I work from home sometimes, but I do a lot of writing of papers and public speaking. I found that my sweet spot is to have three (or four) bookshelves, with two of them in a corner, so it's like a little study carrol in a library. I have a decorated wall and a small couch, and that makes it all work. I know many people would freak from the sheer number of books, but I think life is different if you are an academic or study-oriented type.
It's very individual: "What is considered cluttered and what is considered too minimalist" is for the user to decide.
If the room makes you feel like your head could explode (like the first 2 above do to me) they are too cluttered. If the space is so stark that you want to go someplace else because it depresses you, it's too minimalist. You have to find your own spot on the continuum.
I also think a lot has to do with what, exactly, you need the space for. My Perfect Studio for art and crafting would be large, with a wall of north-facing windows over a wall of counter space that would include a sink. Opposite that would be floor-to-ceiling storage cabinets with adjustible shelves and doors covered in cork so I could use them as pin boards for work in progress (if I chose.) But the clutter of my assorted supplies would be hidden. Everything would be easy to clean, and there would be space for my large tools/equipment at the ends. (I'm not holding my breath, by the way!!)
My 27 shelves give my 1 bedroom, 500 square foot apartment the functionality of a 2 bedroom apartment. But without the increase in rent.
I have a Steelcase chair very similar to those in the first picture that I found on a freeway exit. It's some kind of orange fabric and it doesn't have arm rests. I really like the first picture. Don't care too much about the rest. As for shelves. I like to mix decorative and functional things on shelves.
Yomon, that first photo is from my apartment, so thank you! I wish we found our Pollack chairs on the side of the freeway - ours were most certainly not free, but we LOVE them :)
A year later...
Where ever are those floating drawers (3rd photo) from!? I actually like the ones in the background more than the skinny ones up front, but info on either would be most helpful!
Thanks!
