When I saw the bold fabric statement taken with this project it definitely got my wheels turning…

This project is one of many out of Austin upholstery and furniture shop Spruce. I just love that they went with this fun and unexpected fabric choice.
I often get bored with plain jane couches and would love a really unique, graphic fabric for a couch that you can use as a jumping off point for the rest of the room. This piece is fun, quirky, chic, and unexpected. I love its sweet and lovely visual movement. It definitely wouldn't fit into everyone's palette, but in the right home I think it would really shine.

Howard Butcher Bloc...
love it
Love love the new look. Now please spray paint the legs to shiny black. =)
whoa! so fun and modern!
it's cool, but so trendy that it seems like you'd want to get it reupholstered within five years
AWESOME. I love the legs as they are. I'm impressed by the pattern matching between middle and right cushion!
I like it, don't love it......not enough pizazz. Something is missing ...... a touch of another color may have made it more interesting.
OMG. I love this sooooo much. so adorable and modern.
Fresh, snappy, peppy...yum.
Love it.
Still being impressed by Austin.
HOLY CATS! I love that fabric, it rocks! I kind of disagree about wanting to reupholster it in 5 years it is so quirky I think it would be a great conversation piece and put a smile on your face everyday. Just keep everything else in the room rather neutral and/or safe.
Ya, it doesn't fit into my "palette". To each thier own though. Love the lines of the couch though.
The fabric choice totally makes the shape make sense -- for the first time in that sofa's life! Great eye.
Love the fabric...very cute! Would look great with black legs, a red accent chair, white and black accent pieces!
Love it!!!
Lovely.
Put a deer on it!

Would love it if it had contrasting piping to define the edges. As it is, the pattern just ends and the sofa shape is too amorphous.
Wow! Totally awesome.
love the legs, wish there were more couches around w that styling. fabric is fun too. but, yes, prob needs to be replaced in a few years.
@DuaneHill- I got sucked in to coping and pasting your link, so funny! I don't watch that show nearly enough, it is hilarious! Thanks for the laugh!
I like the before and the after.
I like the sofa; fabric not so much.
Great!
Hmmm. Nice upholstery work, but I'm kind of "meh" on the result. I think I'd like ot see it in a room decorated with it in mind to appreciate it, because out of context, it's just too specific and limiting for my taste.
I liked the original. Have to agree that the talent of the person/people who did the actual upholstery work are artists. Somehow the deer fabric, although cute, would become tiresome to me in about 2 weeks.
Love the bones, tho.
I love the comments who think this needs more pizzaz or isn't interesting enough. My goodness, unless it's covered in pink and blue striped mylar, some people aren't going to be happy.
Personally, this may be my all time favorite after. It looks like pro-work and it's interesting and fun; plenty different and very bold. Love it! Well done.
I love the use of Skinny laMinx's fabric on this couch! I like that the shape of the couch is traditional but the fabric choice is is more modern, it's a great conversation piece and I would definitely keep it with that fabric rather than changing it to something boring later on. It's fun.
I am very impressed by Spruce but not by this couch.
So bad; before and after! Please don't ever show "the right home" this would go in.
I totally agree with Rural and Rueful. Two words: Navy Piping.
Really lovely anyway though.
It's fine, but it would get old fast.
I love it. I also think that the idea of painting the legs is a great one. I'd paint them that same red that's found on the fabric.
Phenomenal!!!!!
I have some classic pieces similar to this I've been holding on to just to get reupholstered at some point. If anyone knows of some great upholstery shops in Chicago, I'd love to hear it!
I love the juxtaposition of an antique couch/chair with contemporary fabric.
I wish Apartment Therapy would stop featuring stuff that was on Design*Sponge. I suspect I am not alone in reading both of these blogs since they are both pretty popular in the home/design blog world. I'd rather see this area used for projects from blogs I'm a lot less likely to come across, or people who don't have a blog instead of the ones that are so popular that they feature projects just like AT does. Just a suggestion for the AT team!
I love this couch and think the fabric and legs are perfect as is. I would find contrast piping a bit too much. And the wood legs are just beautiful - their contrast with the contemporary fabric is just what the piece needs. And I agree with suggestion of someone who said that keeping the rest of room neutral - to me this couch is a work of art that deserves to be showcased in the room. Wonderful job!
Gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree w/ Sarah on the redundancy of featuring design sponge. And I don't like that fabric. Not really sure why.. but I actually think I wold like to see it in the "right home". Its possible I could fall in love.
Love it! Where can I get this fabric??? Who is the designer/maker?
Nice sofa, but I have to admit, I'm not a fan of the deer print...its just too cutesy.
I agree with Sarah...the overlap between blogs is too bad, because I too frequent them both. I do, however, think this couch is fabulous. The bones are really great...the fabric I love, but the combo is not really my taste. Love to see it in a decorated room...
Just curious on what the community here would pay for a couch like that???
OK, but one of those deer should be walking in the opposite direction. Perhaps bottom right. Just something to break that visually slightly downward pattern.
I like I love the overall feeling of the result (the clash of modern and traditional is powerful), but I would have favored a more timeless pattern. The coloring is beautiful. But in a few years anything with a deer or bird on it will seem as out of touch as anything with a sunflower on it.
Love it, but my budget and sensibilities would never allow spending money on a quirky couch.
Sweeeeeet!
Sitt, the fabric is by a South African designer called Heather Moore (Skinnylaminx). Here is her catalogue: http://skinnylaminx.com/shop/catalogue/fabrics-catalogue-2012/. They are not deer, but a small local buck called a duiker. The illustrations are based on San (indigenous people of the Western Cape) rock paintings. Love the couch and fabric, though all I can afford of hers are her dish towels!
I like it because its a non-traditional pattern on a traditional sofa. The pattern repeat breaks across the entire couch and is not limited to custion, backing etc. I think piping could be used but that would alter the feeling of the couch receeding into the print. I really like it.
I rather think that if I sat on that couch with a book and a cup of tea, I would feel quite the sassy one!
