Oliver's "Geek Chic" Nursery

My Room

Name: Oliver
Location: Richmond, VA

The nursery had previously been our guest room which was the first room we had painted when we bought the house four years ago. I had initially gone for a very bold burnt orange but realized quickly we should tone it down to something a bit more soothing.

We finally settled on Benjamin Moore's "Scenic Drive," which served as a great palette from which to work. As for the theme, that's still up for debate. As we initially outlined the room it became clear from the onset that we wanted a room full of stories - whether it be nods to our favorite books and movies or to the story of us and Oliver. An outsider may call it Geek Chic given the amount of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings decor in the room (which I might add, were all gifts from friends!)

As for favorite elements, I'd have to call it a tie between our reupholstered rocker (a find by my husband as we were walking out of an antique shop!) and the print we commissioned from our dear friend Sarah. With the latter we wanted to play off of the traditional "The Cow Goes Moo", "The Pig Goes Oink," etc. prints by incorporating our beloved Bella and Tigh instead. Sarah worked off of a mountain of pet photos I shared with her, and I think she did a fantastic job.

A close second would be a series of prints from Etsy we purchased that includes maps of Italy, Ireland and Spain - all places Oliver (as a baby bump) has traveled thus far. I designed the Johnny Cash quote, which I happened to see in my travels on the inside of one of those airport security bins.

I should note that the Mid-Century dresser was a lucky Craigslist find and my husband Travis and father-in-law John joined forces to refinish and reinforce the dresser, respectively.

I think like many, the challenge is trying to create this fun, playful kid's room while also making it an enjoyable "adult friendly" space since we were going to be spending quite a bit of time in there. I know that before long, the design will evolve and will have far more odes to Sesame Street and dinosaurs than Etsy prints but for now, it was nice to find a happy medium.
