Name: Olivia
Location: Portland, Oregon
I bought my first home (a studio condo) last summer, and have been working on matching it to my personal style ever since. Travel is my biggest inspiration, as I spent a year traveling around the world in 2008. While I wasn't able to shop too much on the road, I have a few smaller items like pillow covers from Marrakech, and scarves from Turkey, and I try to keep my wanderlust under control with my map obsession.
Thanks Olivia!

Shaw's Original Fir...
Cute kitchen...she really needs a bed, though. It's driving me crazy how the mattress is on the floor.
Nice! Congrats on your 1st place. Love the bathroom/kitchen countertops - are they Silestone?
Nice space! Please beware the "my theme is travel, because I traveled once, therefore I must have maps and things that say "travel" on the wall" trope - literal is dreary. It's fine to have a theme, but you want to think imaginatively around it.
Great place, and I love your colorful bedding! Would also like to see the mattress lifted, even if just a few inches on a platform frame. I too, prefer mattresses pretty low to the floor, but it really makes a difference visually just to have a small amount of height to bring it away from "dorm" style.
I love the chalkboard tiles in the bathroom! Great idea!
Olivia, I love your studio and I think the bed looks fine on the floor, but I might add a tray or cube on each side for a bit of purpose to the bed being that way. Your bedding is fun and such a good match to that map! Any chance you could tell us about the map? I would love to track one down for myself!
When I got married, I had a gorgeous (and ridiculously cold and hard to get to) apartment with the bed on the floor. I don't think this place screams TRAVEL. She has A map and the rest could be inspired from her travels. I have A globe. It doesn't scream travel. Beautiful place Olivia. Love the light and the bed cover. The kitchen looks like you've utilized the space well.
I envy those windows too. Love the big windows.
Technically, she has two maps (shower curtain!), but I agree. I love Olivia's apartment, but judging by how it is portrayed in the photos, I would have never known she has traveled.
I think this might be an April Fool's joke.
(sorry it it's not!)
(sorry IF it's not)
Um, there is a Sprite bottel holding a flower in the bathroom. It doesn't look terrible (probably quite common for a 1st apartment), but I'm pretty sure it's a joke.
Wow I hardly ever read comments, but I can't believe how many people dislike this place! I think it's wonderful! It's efficient, tidy, filled with light. I love the bed on the floor; a high bed in a small space takes up too much room. I'd love to see a layout, how the kitchen relates to the living space etc.
ps. I decorate with beautiful old soda bottles all the time.
Where all have you traveled Olivia? Incorporate that into the white walls (they are screaming for attention). Also incorporate something Turkish into the blind that cover the window. Something satiny? What about funky cubes or designer pillows (think Indian/Turkey)? Let your creative juices flow and you'll have your pad designed and your next plane ticket ready for fun.
But it's not a "beautiful old soda bottle." It's just a "I don't have a vase so let me pull this bottle out of the recycling" bottle. The apartment itself is fine, but it looks like someone just moved in, furnishing it with some leftover stuff from her dorm room. Note also that there are no Morrocan pillows or Turkish scarves as described in the post. I don't mean to hurt the feelings of those of you who like this, but surely AT would not post something so clearly devoid of design?
Any place that has a mattress on the floor does not deserve to be on AT. Hoping this is an April Fools joke.
LOL - that condo is about 3 blocks from where I'm sitting right now.
This has got to be April Fool's Hijinks in action! :)
This space feels cheerful enough and everything, but it's basically a dorm room/hotel. So...it's a joke, right?
wow, tough crowd. sure this house tour may not be as glamorous as some of the other tours we see but I'm guessing this is a more realistic view of how most of us live. You don't have to agree with the way its decorated but assuming its an april fools joke is rude. It's like asking someone if they are pregnant, if you are wrong feelings are hurt for no reason. The bad far outweighs the good that could come from these assumptions. And since when did someone not deserve to be on AT? I thought the point of this blog was to feature real people's homes.
Olivia - I love your windows! and second jrossi1217's request for more info on the map above your bed. Very cool.
Please tell where the map over the bed is from! Is it vintage? I really love it and would like to try to find something similar.
Love the map above bed; love the kitchen. However, I think your sleeping area would look better with the mattress off the floor. A designer bed that's somewhat reasonable-ish in price and would look good in your place is the Min bed at DWR.
I'm not going to join the "April Fool!" chorus, but this place isn't AT ready. Sorry if this was meant to be a serious viewing, but it looks very "this is my first non-dorm home, and I don't have anything yet." The bed on the floor looks sad (and I used to have my bed on the floor right out of the college housing) and the rest of the place looks half-done, and not well done. Sorry Olivia!
It looks like a nice studio, great windows and wood floor! It does also look like someone just moved in and still needs to furnish the place, though. But, it has the potential to be a great starter apartment!
I dunno if it's a joke or not, but I still envy you your kitchen for sure. Though mine is not so terrible now. Also, massive windows. Also, studio. I only wish. T.T
(Also, owning and not renting... really?)
Is that the black-brown version of the 2-4 seating ikea leksvik dropleaf table? I... actually really like that table. It is the table that got away. >.>
Criticism - however harsh - isn't necessarily bad thing. I have friends who are designers and architects, and I appreciate their blunt comments - the good, the bad, and the ugly - with regard to critique of my home.
But this is a first-time homeowner here, and her studio wasn't being featured on AT because it was finished and amazing; rather, as the homeowner admits, her studio has been a work in progress. Thus, comments on how her space could be improved would be more appropriate here, rather than non-constructive comments just ripping on the space.
I don't see any birds on anything??? What gives? Is this really Portland???
I don't like the bed on the floor either, get a box spring and frame with your next paycheck.
I also agree that there is no way to guess that the theme of this apartment is travel.
I don't hate the apartment, but there isn't much in it that is unique or special.
Personally, I think having the bed on the floor is reminiscent of floor sitting cushions. I also quite like the map over the bed.
Also, I liked the chalkboard squares in the bathroom, and the window picture is gorgeous.
Frankly, if this apartment had a couple cliched Eames chairs and Saarinen tables, there wouldn't be such a mean reaction.
Love the vintage map. How about pursuing this PanAm hotel chic theme ? You don't seem to like Murphy beds (one could work really well in this space) so maybe a storage bed with interesting bedding separated from the sitting area by a bookshelf ? And your kitchen looks big enough to accommodate the office space. This would leave the way to create a chic dining space in the main room... I look forward to see the AFTER to this.
LOL, this is great ... no, wait, the serious comments to this place are great! and funny
Best laugh of the weekend. Thank you!
Great space! Personal favorites are the map over the bed and the chalkboard squares in the bathroom.
really? congrats on the place, but this is not AT ready.
I agree with nyceastvill. Congrats on your brand new condo! Now go have some fun decorating!
what part of portland do you live in? I am looking for some good suggestions!
Sorry, don't get it. How did this get published?
What's with all you people? This place is beautiful. Why does everyone think you need a ton of stuff? It's such a wasteful, consumptive attitude! And people tend to forget that space is a very important element especially in a studio.
Space for what? Ballroom dancing? And having a bedside table to put a lamp on and a decent bed on which to rest one's head not being "consumptive."
