I adore these low bed frames. I love the look of the sunken mattress and the large solid structure that surrounds them. I'm all for storage and ultra-low platform pieces but in the end, the idea of getting out of bed in the morning isn't one I think should be questionable. Scoot, slide, shift — how far are you willing to go for beauty?
Most beds are a fairly straight forward item. They consist of a frame and often feet and often have a headboard attached. Some modern beds however try to break the typical bed mold and although they're beautiful and stunning to look at — sometimes I can't help but wonder what it would actually be like to get out of bed each morning.

Although my 30-something self is still design-forward in my decor and furniture pieces, I really don't want to give myself a wedgie sliding to the edge of the bed in the morning just so I can stand up. I don't want to dread standing up because my bed is 3 inches off the ground and I don't want to use a step stool to hop up into one.
Pictured above are a few beds that feel like they'd be a small challenge, which one would you say no to? Tell us why in the comments below!

Shaw's Original Fir...
Better a bit too high than too low, for me. I have to hop up the tiniest bit onto my thick thermalfoam mattress, but I'd injure something trying to crawl out of a bed on the floor! That's me, though, not everybody.
I would say no to 1 & 3. #1 because it definitely looks like a middle of the night injury waiting to happen, and 3 because I just don't like the way it looks.
3 doesn't look any higher than my bed with it's full size matress and boxspring, but it sure is ugly.
Well, I thought I was willing to make any changes necessary. So we bought a bed very much like the pine frame with the black and yellow cover. 4 days after it was installed I charged across the room to catch lamp tumbling off a chair side table that the vacuum cord had caught on. The bottom corner of the bed caught my shin and opened up a gash that was about 3 inches long and required 12 stitches. The bed is gone but the scar is for life.
In answer to your question on #4, no, that is not where the cat sleeps -- at least, not if you give the cat any choice in the matter. The cat sprawls over the softest part of the bed, generously leaving you the hard triangular part to rest on.
I don't know about anyone else, but I like the idea of simply rolling out of bed, onto the floor, and slithering into the shower like a snake. Mixes things up a bit.

Is #1 rotating? Please tell me that it is. If it is, I want it so, so bad. That bed would be, like, the pièce de résistance in my bedroom which I'm trying to put together to impress the ladies. I will cover it with that cougar bed linen you featured a few weeks ago. Rawr!
Molly I agree! I loved when my bed was just the mattress on the floor because we couldn't squeeze the boxspring up the stairs it was nice knowing that I wouldn't fall out of bed which I do when I am stressed
I like low beds but I know I would bang my ankles, shins or whatever. My mother won $10,000 in free furniture and one of things she picked out was an Amish style frame with corners that jut out. I always leave her place with a bruise on my thigh. The height doesn't bother me, it's the injuries.
#1 looks like it's made of solid concrete--the whole thing. Totally uninviting with it's hard-looking mattress and sharp edges.
The whole room is too cold and austere and I'm not digging its 80s Wall Street vibe.
@cremedela, @molly k, @edmarch - you are all too funny!
With all the lights out, I would fall and crack my head open on the way to the bathroom, if I had the first bed!
LMAO Molly, you just made my afternoon ten times better.
Personally, I don't think floorsclose to the ground are a bad thing, as long as there is something in between the matress and the floor
I know a lady who insists that low beds are the way to stay mobile as you get older--that the little bit of a workout of your hips and knees helps keep them in working order.
I prefer a lower bed than a high one (I can't stand feeling like I have to literally climb into bed), but many of these are too low even for me. Ideally, I'd have a bed with enough clearance to vacuum underneath, but with no box spring and a thin enough mattress to be right at sitting height.
We have the best of both worlds with ours. It was custom-made by a friend of ours. It's pretty low to the ground, but still has a few inches underneath. We get the cool low look (similar to number 5) while still planting our feet firmly on the ground.
Too low is just as ridiculous as too high. I don't want a bed I need to jump on (like the ones often found in the U.S.), and I don't want one which is hard to get out of. It's just that simple: consider human scale.
That last one looks like pain in the making if you don't have your bedroom lights on when you come to bed. I always come to bed at least an hour after the SO, which means dealing with dark bedroom... and the cantilevered wood in the last picture looks like something that attacks shins in the dark.
I mean, sure, who isn't afraid of the monster under the bed? I'm just not too keen on when the monster IS the bed.
Due to a miscalculation on my part, I wound up with a bed that comes up to about my hips - around 36" high or so. I was worried if I went with the slats it would be too low, but it turns out the bottom of the frame was actually the top of the side-rails so the addition of the box spring makes it a little Princess-and-the-Pea. I'm still able to throw my leg on top of the thing and belly-flop up, but I also got a cheap folding step-stool to help in the event that I'm injured and/or too drunk to safely ascend my bed.
I was skeptical when I first set it up, but it turns out that it kind of makes me feel like I'm floating in the clouds when I go to bed. The only thing I don't like is that I can no longer share the bed with my earthbound corgi-mix, as they don't make pet steps high enough for her stumpy legs, but with a gentle enough rise that her long body can handle it. Doesn't bother her, but I miss it!
One or two of the beds look okay but I am still not too crazy about low platform beds. I prefer beds that I can easily get out of!

Some of these scream "Welcome to Vegas!"
Seriously? I say no to all of them. The high bed with the drawers could be a contender if it wasn't ugly - I've had high beds before. All of the others scream pain to me - either in the wedgies getting out of bed or the bruised shins from finding the bed in the dark.
I acquired a free metal Ikea bed frame with slats (Logga) from a friend. I slept with my pillowtop mattress on top of the slats for a week and it just wasn't working for me, so I had to put my box spring under the mattress. The top of the bed is 36" high and I have to climb into bed every night, but it makes getting out easy. Some of my roommates call it the 'royal bed'
I'd need shin guards and one of those handles that old people use to get out of bathtubs.
i mentioned on a previous post i like both low and high beds (nothing is too low or too high for me!), but i'm a little apprehensive about those frames with the stuff sticking out. we're an odd couple of sleepers and i'd anticipate stubbing my foot on it in my sleep, or not remembering there's an extra step to the edge of the bed.
I never minded that my bed was a little on the tall side...and then I had abdominal surgery. I had two of those folding step stools stacked on top of each other, just so I could swivel out of bed and put my feet on something (and avoid using my abdominal muscles). It was 8 weeks of agony. Plus we have some corners that stick out, and I get fun injuries from time to time.
Maybe it makes me uncool or boring, but I'll be going with a basic bed frame, short mattress, and headboard next time. And save the money for some nice bedding.
I would have stubbed toes and permanently black-and-blue shins.
Does anyone remember the Ikea round bed....I have always wanted that bed, but were the heck would you sleep!?
#3 looks like an ikea knock off but cheaper quality (that is the joke)
