Whether it's a collection of masks brought home from your travels or a fun addition to a child's room, masks are a departure from the typical wall artwork, adding a playful touch full of texture and interest. I'm personally a huge fun of the Chewbacca mask as a bedside sconce in photo 5, talk about an original idea!

Super cute idea for a kid's room or play area. Keep it fun!
Masks creep me out big time.
really?? that last photo would make me wet the bed if I woke up and thought someone was standing so near my face!
Five Guatemalan jaguar masks hang over my sofa. I like colorful painted wood animal masks as much as I dislike mounted animal heads.
My step-father is an anthropologist who has traveled the world collecting masks. Some are creepy-some aren't. He displays them all together above the mantel--probably 15 or so. Our kids all LOVE looking at them!
Masks are really good in transitional spaces, like hallways or foyers, because they're very active/dynamic (like cartoon portraits). I have a couple favorites in my study, because I like how they animate the room. I find they're more unsettled in living rooms (they have to be designed around), and downright difficult in bedrooms -- it's like inviting another person in (it has to be exactly the right person...).
Masks can be really intense, so take your time picking one out -- when you find the right one you'll know it. I think that's why people who like masks end up collecting them. They can be an amazing window into another culture (for me it was traditional Mexico), as well as something universal and archetypal.
Definitely not for me. The animal ones don't creep me out as much.
They're looking at me, behind my back, when Im asleep - o dear no...
oh wow! Chinese Zodiac masks!! Cool!
The last one terrifies me. Almost as bad as having Balinese marrionettes in your home.
I LOVE!!!! masks... I make the myself too... but as time will show...even if they are absolutely beautiful items to hang on any wall through your house.. Their shapes make them specially prone to catch dust in time....What i decided to do to keep them from dust and environmental damage was to display them all in a closed glass shelved unit. They look beautiful still and keep better.
