On the Hunt For: Mid-Century Sunburst Sculptures

Back when we toured Rich & Julie's Rhode Island loft, we were struck by the dramatic mid-century sunburst sculpture they had mounted above their bed. They found it at an antique store in Montreal, where similar pieces are plentiful at the vintage shops on Rue Amherst and we were curious to find out more about the unique works.

Most of the sunburst sculptures we've seen are attributed to Curtis Jere, the name taken by artists Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels who started creating the sculptures for Artisan House starting in 1963. Other artists including William Bowie and Harry Bertoia also designed similar works. Antique stores, eBay, VandM (images 2 & 3) and 1st Dibs (image 4) are great places to start looking for sunburst sculptures, and for the less intrepid thrifter Crate & Barrel offers a reproduction sunburst mirror for $199 (image 5).
