This week, eBay and Jonathan Adler opened a new, 24/7 shopping experience here in New York. Located in a string of Park Avenue windows, The ebay Inspiration Shop is filled with instantly shoppable eBay listings selected by 30 of today's tastemakers. I caught up with Jonathan at the launch party and picked his brain about everything from his inspiration for designing the windows to his Halloween costume. Find out more after the jump.
Because people love window shopping (and because people love making impulse purchases), eBay leads the way with The eBay Inspiration Shop. This "always-open" storefront features an array of merchandise, hand-selected by trendsetters like Betsy Johnson, Charlotte Ronson and Jonathan Adler — who also designed the windows for the store. In a new kind of shopping experience, items featured in the windows can be instantly purchased by scanning a handy-dandy QR code with your eBay app.
Jonathan Adler was on-hand at the launch of the event and offered this about his work with eBay and more:
M: So, J. Tell me about your inspiration for these crazy windows.
J: Well, I am a hardcore eBay user, so I was stoked when they asked me to design the storefront. I wanted to use the signature Ebay colors and the first thing that popped in my mind was the work of Yayoi Kusama—a Japanese artist who basically spent her entire life in a mental institution. She does these super poppy, polka-dotted installations that are very trippy.
M: So the items in the windows are selected by various trendsetters—yourself included. What was your pick for the collection?
J: A Nook eReader from Barnes & Noble.
M: Don't you make covers for the Nook?
J: I do. I am a hardcore Nook user, in fact. I guess you could say I am part of the Nook cover community.
M: Well, some people are nesters and some people are Nookers.
J: I'm a Nooker!
M: What's the best thing you've ever bought on Ebay?
J: I'm wearing it! (A vintage brass cord-and-plug belt buckle)
M: Groovy! You know the best thing I've ever purchased on Ebay?
M: Footed pajamas screen-printed with Lindsay Lohan's face.
J: That's a freaky scene.
M: So, we are moving into holiday season. What is the must-have Jonathan Adler piece for entertaining?
J: Ooh! We have a squirrel filled with chocolate covered almonds, that's a must have. Or a pig with filled with chocolate covered bacon bits. Basically, look forward to a lot of fattening animals filled with chocolate.
M: Because the people are dying to know. What will you be for Halloween?
J: This halloween I'm going to be a bumblebee. And no, not a sexy one.
