On Trend in Europe: Gray & Black
...for the Bath

Cersaie 2012

I'm just back from Cersaie, the massive tile show held each year in Bologna, Italy. After viewing booth after booth displaying of some of the most beautifully, carefully crafted tiles in the world, you start to see some trends emerge…

Gray is a very popular color choice for interiors right now - it is essentially THE current neutral and dark, dramatic walls are definitely in for other rooms of the home. Therefore, it's not super surprising that gray and black were shown very prominently at Cersaie, even for the the bath.

That said, it still could be a challenging look to pull off. The key to success in incorporating these colors - to help it feel modern, clean and not scary-decadent-OTT - seems to be the finish. Super shiny is not the way to go, especially for the sinks and toilets. A definite preference for matte finishes seems to go along with these colors (and frankly for any color for the more fashion-forward displays/brands).

This is good news for anyone who is considering eschewing the light, bright look of white sanitary ware and tiles for the bath. Many of these brands are available through US distributors and, with the way trends travel, even more gray and black options will bound to be showing up here in North America before long.
