I'm just back from attending Woonbeurs Amsterdam, the annual design show presented by the publisher of a family of very popular interior magazines in the Netherlands. The editors of each title put together a trend house to reflect the aesthetics of their particular publication and they were absolutely fascinating - so many fresh ideas all in one place! For my first trend report, here is a look that can best be described as Modern Romantic…
… as presented by Ariadne at Home magazine.
The color palette is gray, white, purple, pink and green and there is plenty of metallics (gold and silver, both dull and shiny) and rough, aged patinas in the mix. Shapes are curvy; lots of rounded corners, circles with flourishes and decorative, lacy patterns. The look is decidedly feminine but with a slight edge, thanks to the use of some neon accents, aged finishes (rust, worn paint) and quirky industrial-influenced details.
I snapped gazillions of pictures — here are a few that typify the style…

Like the palette but too many accent objects.
Looks similar to a Brocade spread. That said I do like the look..
ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!! One of my favorite posts!
This is very interesting. Can find a lot of this style at Central Pennsylvania auction houses. And it is fairly inexpensive.
AT's at its best when you are our lens on the world of fresh design. Love the lace doily pendant lamp. Design Sponge had a similar DIY post for any of you hankering for one!
It's like Amélie, but all white. Some of it seems very car-boot-saley, which is not a bad thing. I'd like to see it mixed in with one or two more surreal or minimalist pieces, it's all a little matchey matchey to my taste.
Laurabootsy: this is a "trend" report NOT an actual house which is why the look is a bit matchey. Nice to have a post that's not the oft emphasized MCM look (i.e. trend).
@Susan Ellison: I'm in Dillsburg, we should go auctioning!
I like the idea of a style called "Modern Romantic", but I don't think what is shown here is quite 'it'.
Hmm, I'm not loving it, but it's refreshing to see something different. It looks like shabby chic modern to me. I'd expect something a little more cutting edge from the Dutch.
@Spaderdam: You're right, it's a shabby chic version of brocade. And I didn't know until right now that I want to live in that.
This confuses me so much because I love everything about it. Yet, I have a sleeker cleaner home with some big modern color punches. I am going to have to figure out how to integrate some of this new-old world beauty.
I love this! It's so beautiful...I wish I could pull off all that white. A bit impossible with a 4 year old girl, a two year old boy and another boy coming soon. Maybe when they're off to college! LOL
I don't think this could be called a "European Trend" - it's just the over-sweet shabby chic look that Ariadne has been pushing for years (and the reason I no longer buy the magazine...). The trend here tends toward innovative and eclectic, and the Vt-Wonen and 101 Woonideeën magazines are much more typical, I think, of "trend" interiors here on the continent.
I am a Texan living in A'dam and I find the dutch style hard to understand. Everything is usually the same- I can go to a number of home stores with different names and find the exact same thing. There isn't much sun so thus- the lighter floors- most everything else is white (walls, cabinets, bathrooms)- and there isn't much space- so nothing looks like in the pics above. I just got the most recent Elle Decor and it was a total there was nothing but very modern/simple (bed only in a bedroom) design.
@trishkrafts: I 'm sort of in the same spot. I love MCM furniture and clean lines and generally a clutter-free space. At the same time I love vintage lace and ruffle accents and velvety fabrics. I'm just planning to build those accents on my sleek structured base and hope for the best.
it looks uncomfortable, also don't like the colors, eyes not happy.
Nice color palette - seems aligned with this region of the world so not surprising. It is refreshing to find a mix of old, new and metallic accessories under one roof with a predominately white color base. A bit more editing could be done for my taste but it photographs well.
Not my style for sure, and not something I've seen in any other Dutch homes, but it's nice. I do love the doily lamp - I made all the light fixtures in my home from all sorts of materials (straws, paper, crocheted silk, etc), nice to have some fresh ideas!
I find myself drawn to this look more and more. Thank you for this post.
Love this look. Thank you for your inspiration!
Looks like home, only white -- and there's way too much Stuff.
I personally like the accessories paired with the crisp, clean look of whites and pastels. It doesn't seem over done to me. LOVE the soft, romantic look here.
Looks like Shabby Chic and Urban Outfitters had a baby...and like a better version of my previous apartment.
I'm not really a fan of the Romantic look since the colors are too muted for me, but there are some good pieces in there. I like the first picture and I got a good idea on what I can do with an open closet I have at home.
Well it's an updated version of shabby chic to me... which is fine because I think shabby chic started out okay, and then people were all "Let's add even MORE ruffles!" (Does that metaphor make sense?) This seems like a more pure version of it. And I think mixing some modern elements/geometric patterns is refreshing, like in the 3rd picture from the bottom.
I love the wood chair with the front sliced off. Subtle yet arresting, and a little bit transgressive.
"Honey, who was that at the door?"
"No one- just the 1980's trying to make a come-back"
"Good Lord! Did you bolt the door?"
"Yes, and if they try again, I;m calling in the design police!"
love how fresh and pretty these are! i am not a shabby chic gal but these are lovely!
Love the ceramic wood stove; wish there were ceramic stoves available in North America.
It's like the Victorians decided to decorate their house with furniture from Greece. I like it, but I don't think it could work for a space I have to share with my boyfriend!
@Zhahira I am with you. I really love this but I was just thinking that I would never be able to get my hubby on board. Maybe I'll just sprinkle a few little touches here and there... :D
I love those lacy plates on the wall. They remind me of sanddollars in a way. Where can I get them?
Ornate faux-styled distressed pieces of furniture paired with industrial chairs and feminine pom-pom accessories... I've been seeing it here in France for years and I'm completely over it. Plus, living in the North of France, I can tell you it does not agree with the light here. It rains a lot, the light is not that of the South of France, so you get a washed-out depressing look, especially with that violet-mauve color and those distressed white.
While I'm not for vibrant colors at all price, the North of Europe has an amazing, very cold light that sets of lots of style. But not this one.
Modern romantic. I like that. Maybe that's what Denmark's Anne Black porcelain is? LOVE the soft, all white look.
I love this look. There's a great book called Romatic Style by Selina Lake that anyone interested in creating the romantic look for their home should check out.
Looks like cluttered early Martha Stewart
Wow, so NOT my style I kind of feel itchy!
I've never seen that style in the Netherlands and it's not my cup of tea but I'm sure some people will love it. :)
Maybe the Dutch rejected shabby chic the first time around so it's a new trend there?! I do like the doily lampshade but that's it I'm afraid.
same old distressed stuff that i don't get... "if it's shabby, it isn't chic!" brocade does it better
I love the muted colour pallette and the mixed metals. This isn't a style that I'd necessarily emulate in my own home but it certainly looks pretty.
