Here we go...this Friday, we'll kick off our 7th Annual Small Cool Contest. Which means that all of you living in homes under 1000 square feet should get busy; sprucing up, snapping your very best shots and putting the finishing touches on your floorplan…
...because this could be YOUR year!
The Divisions:
- • TEENY-TINY 400 Square Feet and under
• TINY 600 Square Feet and under (but over 400 Square Feet)
• LITTLE 800 Square Feet and under (but over 600 Square Feet)
• SMALL Under 1,000 Square Feet (but over 800 Square Feet)
• INTERNATIONAL All non-US entries (under 1,000 Square Feet)
To enter, you'll need 5 photos of your small cool home and one floorplan. Get on it right away and be ahead of the pack when we open up the entry form on Friday. As is often the case, the early bird gets the worm - the first 20 posted entries get a copy of the Big Book of Small Cool Spaces AND the earlier you are in, the more time you have to garner "likes" for your entry.
Prize info will be announced on Friday, but trust me, they are good!
Will YOU be entering this year? Let us know in the comments below!

This is the year! My little 205 sq ft place is in!! :- )
NOOOOOOOOO!! i'm so bummed i can't enter this year!! my teeny tiny 330sq. foot apartment is going under renovations from a studio to a one bedroom (yay!) but it's happening all during small cool (boo!). good luck everyone!!! :) :)
My little studio was featured after the renovation was completed in mid-2009. I didn't know about the contest last year and I'm wondering if I can submit it this year...?
jayro: Your place is amazing!! I'm not sure if you can submit if you've been shown on a house tour...? Maybe ask via the 'Contact Us' page? If you could, you'd probably win—your place is phenomenal!
jayro212: YES, you can enter. Everyone is welcome to enter, regardless of whether their home has appeared on the site previously.
LOVE the small cool contest!!! I'm another in the 300 sqft club. Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of a redesign and purge... Why can't this be after a cure?
Wait! I see the start date! April Fool's, right? No??? Ah well... we'll see if I can make it on time. It looks like the teeny tiny division is going to be packed! Good luck, everyone! :)
Hmmm... overenthusiastic punctuation in my last post.
I can only plead small cool induced elation.
Absolutely! Entered last year and came in close to getting into the finals... maybe this year (new apartment, new size category, new year) will be my year.
My place won't be ready by then, I have the worst couches ever and I skipped a dining room table for a pool table. maybe next year
I love seeing how creative people can be with tiny surfaces ! I'm looking forward to the entries !
On a side note (kind of an obsession for me), is there going to be a spring cure this year ? I'm desperately needing one, but was waiting for the AT cure to start. I might do it on my own, but it's less fun.
Loora,
Yes, there will be a Spring Cure - Maxwell is still sorting out the scheduling. Stay tuned for exact dates...
as mentioned, the first 20 entires get a copy of the Big Book of Small Cool Spaces, is that for all enteries or for U.S. citizens?
woo hoo! I was sad that I had just moved last year and my apartment wasn't in shape, so you better believe I'm ready to go!
In what universe are 800-1000 sq ft homes small? Because I want to move there...
(disclaimer: onlineconversion says 1000 sq ft is 93 sq meters, correct?)
i really want to post this year! just have to repaint the kitchen so it's not such a half-done eyesore!
@jaenmn: in the U.S. universe where the average size of an American home is between 2000-2500sq ft.
I entered last year and made it into the finals. Don't think I'll enter this year, but great luck to all those who do. It was lots of fun!
Janel, thank you for your answer ! I'll stop asking about the cure and enjoy the posting while waiting and watching my inspiration files grow !
I might! Just means I have to spruce up the place a bit before hand! :)
ah shoot! i'm moving in two weeks from a 400 sq ft to a 500-600 sq ft ... i'll be ready next year :D
is it 5 photos AND a floor plan (6 photos total) or 5 photos INCLUDING the floor plan (5 photos total)? i'm hoping it's the former
I live in 696 sq ft and don't consider it small. I have a 20 x 20 foyer/living/dining/kitchen, a large BR, a modest bath, five closets, and a 120 sq ft terrace. I have very little furniture and no clutter, and it lives large. I've lived in larger houses stuffed to the gills that seemed smaller than this.
I haven't finished framing and hanging my art pieces, but when I do, I may just enter the contest. I won't win, but it would be fun to compete. My collection is completely tied to sentimental items, rather than appearance. Every piece reminds me of someone I love, or is tied in some way to people who loved me.
I'm going to try to make it in. I just moved from 900 Sq. Ft. to a 525 Sq. Ft. apartment. Love my new place and layout, but having trouble figuring out where to place everything. Sigh.
Please find a sponsor for the international section, this year. The Conran shop or Habitat, I won't say IKEA, but we ought to compete for a prize too.
Oh I really hope so! I've been inspired by all the grey paint recommendations so I'm redoing my big room (the kitchen/ dining/ entry/ living room) in Ben Moore's Winter White. Once the canvas is reset, I'll see whether I can make it :) Either way, looking forward to seeing everyone's amazing work.
@jaenmn: Trust me, 1000 square feet is small, when you have a whole family in it! We aren't all swingin' singles, after all! ;)
Man, somehow I got it in my head that this was a fall contest. Well, shoot. I would be ready by then. guess i'll have to wait for the 2012 round! Got to save up for some framing, first...
That floor plan is sooo cute. Anyone know what program was used to create it or have any suggestions for good ones?
Yes! I've been waiting all year!
There are plenty of free floor plan options out there. I think floorplanner.com offers a free, web-interface, though you can't save anything. And then there's Google's Sketch Up, which you can download and install for free.
I love Small Cool! Mostly because floor plans are mandatory! :)
My place is still in moving-back-in-after-renovations, but maybe next year.
@AmmoniteInk: Back when I was living with my parents, our 1000sqft included a living/dining room, kitchen, master bedroom, bathroom, powder room, three children rooms and a home office (plus a few extra perks like a walk-in closet and a huge pantry), and it comfortably housed a family of five. Perhaps my European sense of size is a bit off, but how can that possibly be considered small?
Either way, I wanted to enter this year but there's no way I'd be ready before fall, too much renovation going in. Next year :)
"AND the earlier you are in, the more time you have to garner "likes" for your entry."
This means no 48 hour limit on thumbs up? I worry that will skew the contest to the early posters... but I should probably be more worried about scrounging up an additional dining chair and sewing some curtains.
LizU - I wondered about that as well. I think a good compromise to ensure late-comers (to the voting) get to vote would be to have the 48 hours for each entry and then at the end of thumbs up have 24 hours to vote on everyone.
Yes can't wait to show off my small place.
My tiny (590 sq ft) apartment is not ready for prime time, but next year, I'll be entering!
i'm in!
yep. think i'm gonna do it this year!!
My place isn't ready for this year, but maybe if I make enough money this year I can fix what's wrong and get it in for next.
My 475-sq-footer might be ready to make its debut! Whether or not I'm ready is a 'whole nother story.'
Regardless, I'm stoked for SCC!
I'm about 950 sq. ft. But, as much as I enjoy interior decorating and DIY projects, I don't think my rowhouse it's contest-worthy. Perhaps more house-tour worthy.
Rather oddly, though, I've recently discovered that I've got somewhat of a more natural knack for exterior landscape design.
I really want to enter.. but I don't think my flat will be ready in time! Shelves to install and artwork to hang.. hmm. Maybe this should be my motivation to get it done..
YES!... I'll be voting!
Do you have a tiniest tiny category?
Our flat here in Germany is 111sq ft.
I am submitting!!!
anna
We just closed on our apt, got the keys and began the painting process. We will not make it for this year, but I hope for next year! Good luck to all and thanks for the many inspirations to come.
yes yes yes, i'll submit!
"and I skipped a dining room table for a pool table"
@ applebomb: smart move. I wish I had the space to do the same thing :)
Ooh, I'm going to try! 280 SF represent!
I'm going to use this as inspiration as we're moving from a one-bedroom Little to a two-bedroom Little in a week and a half...wish we had enough time to enter!
I was so hoping to be ready to enter but 11 months after buying my 400 ft sq place and 3 sets of crappy contractors later, it won't be happening... maybe next year :(
what time zone is the starting time based on? Pacific time is a whole lot later than Atlantic?? Might be fun!
Oooh, I think my apartment is looking good enough this year to consider submitting. Excited!
Sweet! Can't wait to see pretty, tiny apartments!
I really want to enter but not sure if I'll be ready. Construction just completed & I just moved in, still adding all my decor touches (although I've been accumulating and planning for the past 8 months).
I too am so glad floor plans are submitted because it's difficult to get a perspective looking at closeup shots of peoples' tchotkes on an end table.
I'd love to enter! My place is a rental though, and I don't have access to the plans nor know how to measure it properly, so no idea how big it is (it's definitely under 1000sqft though!)
OMG, I am so stupid...I converted meters to feet, without "square"...so tat I answered the survey thinking my apartment is 350 square feet (70 m2), but in fact, it is 750 square feet...A huge difference, shame on me...
ARGH! In the past two weeks, we've had a fire and two floods in my building (I have a "garden level" unit--guess whose apartment flooded...) My carpet is currently torn up and all of my furniture is crammed against the wall. No time to prettify in time for the contest. :\
The international submissions should be categorized into sizes as well...for all of the teeny-tiny international folks.
why is it separated into the US/rest of the world anyway? small and cool apartments are small and cool no matter where they are, n'est-ce pas?
Great! My home finally is ready, well... almost... ´cause a home is a home, never will be complete! ;-)
ooohhh noooo!!! I have my bedroom under a big renovation!! I have it all set it up but I don't have any sort of decor yet. mmmhh maybe if I hurry...
what time can you start signing up?
Help!! I forgot to post a photo to my bedroom for the contest. Anybody knows how do I post now? Do I make a new entry?
