We usually turn to our laptop to watch T.V. (thank you Hulu). Which means that our living room has turned into a sitting room where we listen to records, get work done on the laptop and occasionally pull a chair up to the window and people watch outside. Alan's sitting room reminds us of one we'd like to create--a cozy spot to retreat.
Alan's sitting room is full of layers and texture--mixing up patterns and prints which adds to the inviting look. The pairing of dark wood and shades of green is a great color combo which is soothing and has an organic feel. Big windows and white built-in bookcases balance the dark tones making the space feel alive and fresh. Plants also breathe life into this den of comfort with free-standing light sources illuminating each nook. The layered look is furthered by Alan's wall decor--salon style prints and tapestry hung above the couch and low-hung artwork in additional seating areas.

Ok...I'll take this home! This is so my style. I love everything about it.
Is this a real place??? or staged?.... It's so unperfectly perfect it's rather scary.... it's like one of the Stepford Wives is going to show up any minute...
Love it. I give it a 9.5. Ditch the red/metal stool... out of place and not needed. Otherwise, lovely.
Wow Manu - Such a backhanded compliment...
I think it's a delightful room - Could easily be inspiration for a living space in a smaller home.
I especially enjoy the pair of upholstered chairs around the small table by the windows - Perfect for working on the laptop or writing holida cards, but also for an elegant little candlelight dinner for two or tea and croissants in the morning.
Beth - not to change the subject but would love more details about that lovely yellow chair in the first link of the post. I recently bought a blue one exactly like it on Craigslist and was astounded at how well-made it was. First owner didn't know where it was from either (had been in his family a while) and there's no indication of manufacturer.
I'd love some details on where you got yours in case it came from the same place as mine. Thanks!
I agree with Dede...the stool really throws off the balance of the whole room. Warmly lit with the lamp, the room looks nice.
RachaelS--the chair is part of a pair and I picked them up from St. Vincent De Paul in Los Angeles (very inexpensive) but great finds! The only thing that bums me out about them is that they're on wheels (I feel like that makes them less sturdy) not to mentions scratches my hardwood floors. Sorry I don't have a better answer--good luck on your search and keep me posted!
What lovely prints on those chairs! So autumny - they just scream hot cider and a good book.
I also love the chairs!
Also, about the stool -- I don't dislike it, and it seems quite practical. I have two stools in my own living room because I often have enough people over to warrant the extra impromptu sitting room.
This is a really lovely room--it looks calm and inviting.
Who is this Alan person - I love his style. It's a brilliant combination of colours, textures and patterns; rich without being loud.
love the rug!
i agree such a warm cozy living room! And Blandwagon's comment is right on.
i would love to have a sitting room. Before my fiance moved in my apt, i had a mini TV in my living room that was never on....now there is a HUGE tv in the corner which is ALWAYS ON! i love love my fiance, but miss not having a room centered around the TV...someday a sitting room. a girl can always dream!
I love this room. Lately I've wanted to paint over my dark walls with a soothing white, and leave the color for the furnishings. I like the slightly darker trimwork, too.
