Today's One Minute Tip comes from Justin Klosky and the O.C.D. Experience.
• The Star: Drawing from his life-long struggle with the clinical form of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), Justin has transformed the cumbersome disorder into an organization that promotes stress reduction and manageability. Branded as "Master Organizer" on CBS's The Talk and "Organization Expert" on the Anderson Show with Anderson Cooper, Justin works hard to bring order to his clients' lives. With O.C.D.'s guidance and expertise, clients can get through the most difficult obstacles to create a systematic approach to living.

Commercial Flour Sa...
People always tell me to get medication for my OCD, but it's actually a really useful tool in my life... most of the time.
What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder anyway? Being neat and tidy? Cleaning things? Wanting things organized?
@Amaranta it's a little difficult to explain, because it comes in so many forms and degrees. One of these forms is, as you said, the person who feels the need to clean all day or organize but unlike someone who does not suffer from OCD, who can choose not to act on that impulse, for them it is a "compulsive" act which may conflict with other things they need to get done, and someone with OCD usually suffers from severe anxiety if they do not act on that impulse. In severe cases this takes over their lives completely, they often "want" to stop what they are doing, but feel they cannot. I don't know if that helps much, without whipping out a book on the subject. Other forms of OCD have to do with symmetry, checking things, rituals etc. So in reality OCD is not synonimous with being "tidy" ( in fact most organized individuals are just clean and nothing more) it is just one of the ways it can manifest itself. Excuse any typo I'm on a moving train.
Who cares about the wires? Hello, Justin!
That was probably uncooth. Kinda like an internet cat-call. Whatev. He is still adorable.
Uncouth. Eek.
Wires are always necessary to manage and given a minute we had to come up with something useful! :) You should see the desks I have built above!
Hi to all and hi Lisa!
Mary, Felipe, Amaranta and Kellinicia...OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) comes in many forms, but what tends to happen is the obsessions and compulsions end up taking over people's lives. I have directed my compulsions into organizing my environment which leaves me obsessing and focusing on organizing, which is much more productive than obsessing on hundreds of other distractions. It really is very mental to start, but then the discipline comes in on keeping the organization so I don't have to obsess as much. OCD now becomes O.C.D.- Organize & Create Discipline.
@MARY AND FELIPE Thank you for your explanation. I think many of us are like that normally apart from the anxiety. I've taken part in many conversations here about ordering books by colour, hanging clothes by colour (in the closet AND on the washing line), fussing about exact placements of objects, being super-tidy, cleaning a lot - all of which I do.
Oh, and curating the fridge and making sure that the icons on my iPhone are colour coordinated!
I thought though that the reason is that I'm a designer and love attention to detail.
@JUSTINKLOSKYOCD I love that quote "Organize & Create Discipline". That's what I'd like to think I do :)
You should see my pantry - all colour coded and organized by food-type. At least I can find stuff!
This is great idea! Our computer wires at work have a similar set up. I never thought to do something like this at home. Thanks!
Bravo Justin.
I know people with OCD and will send them a link to your site. Everyone can use a little hope!
I've created a false side in my desk, the bottom is open to the room, where all the power bars and cords live...Not ideal but okay.
Thanks for the smile lisalisadonut.
I purchased a cheap wire organizer from Ikea that hold's my power strip and all my wires perfectly... It's not quite as custom but I am pretty happy with it.

Let's try that link again...
My Under Desk Solution From Ikea
Uh...there were wires in that video? I have no idea because I was too busy staring at Justin.
I like it!
It doesn't seem very flexible if you want to remove something, or add something, do you have undrill it?
We've installed a false baseboard which sits a few inches out from the wall, creating a kind of channel for wires and power strips. It helps to hide all the cords when your desk is not near an electrical or cable outlet. But I still have to look at the hideous router, sling box, and other evil minions that need to send out a signal.
Does anyone have a solution for those?
You don't get OCD for drilling a hole right thru your desk? I couldn't do that to mine.....
Bravo on the wire management vid! I'm looking at my desk right now and wondered why I didn't think to hide my wires....it looks like a complete mess!
The best part of these wire pipes is that it is very simple! @kannachan you do not have to undrill the pipes ever and if you add a wire it just snakes through the extra space in the pipe. In fact, using a solution like this is all about the planning. If you are the type of person who will be adding and adding to the wire pipes, I suggest getting a larger gauge pipe which will give you more room for your additional wires. For me it was very simple, as I planned out what would be stationed on my desk and made an estimate from there.
@romebe ...drilling the holes was part of the construction of the desk. Since I built the desks from scratch I knew where each and ever hole was going to be which was very soothing to my OCD!
@gluttenforpunishment think about putting your router and slingbox somewhere else as it doesn't necessarily have to be on or near your desk.
Thanks for the flattering compliments @citygirlsf, @lisalisadonut and @crownology! :)
or, get an iMac...
DIMPLES!
OCD runs the gamut from needing to organize your space or feeling out of sorts if stuff is not organized to going around organizing other spaces. It is a disorder but one I live with and actually kind of love. Why? because when everyone else is freaking out or procrastinating or trying to put things "together" OCD helps me to organize my thoughts so explanations coming from me are a bit clearer to understand. It does have its limits in that folks who don't get you can find you stressful. S'alls good though. As for the cable idea I do like it. I keep buying those wire organizers and their glue fails. this looks like a neat idea but one caution, you must be near and outlet or have longer than usual wires because once you route it all it may not reach the power sources.
I found this video incredibly helpful. No matter how clean and uncluttered the top of my desk looks I can never seem to fix the look of complete and utter chaos underneath my desk. Not to mention how my feet constantly touch the wires (dangerous). I will use this tip to organize the bottom of my desk! Big fan of this guy. Check out this cool cat's twitter too, I'm a big fan of his tweets!! @justinkloskyocd
Keep inspiring us Justin!
One question? Is it hard to replace a wire once it's already in the contraption? I use my mac charger at home and on the go..Im afraid that if I put it in I may have a hard time getting it out to take on the road..
iMacs still have wires. Just not as many! And I don't like the idea of a totally wireless environment... too many electrons whizzing thru the air. I like this video a lot - beyond the charms of the presenter, it's the start of thinking holistically about your wiring.
As an architect, a brick and mortar architect, that is - people and home builders still live in a 1950's set up as far as wiring and outlets. It's starting to change, but not fast enough! I feel like the real magic bullet: the perfect interface between the internet and ourselves - hasn't been invented yet. Until then, we have nice folk like Justin!
@Desireonfire the answer is no! It is very simple...in fact dedicate just one of the pipes for wires that are constantly in-flux and on-the-go. This was it is even simpler to remove those wires that won't be stationary.
