Rob in PDX figured out one of the secrets to the universe: an easy trick to make sure you'll make your bed every day, no matter what. And, because he's a nice guy, he shared it with us:
In the comment thread of our post, 5 Chores You Should Never Skip (Even If You Are Busy) , Rob wrote:
For me, the trick to getting myself to do these chores was to create habits that made sense. For example: the bed. I finally made a daily habit of making my bed when I combined it with my morning coffee ritual. There's always a few minutes between pouring the water and when the coffee is ready. So, I make a pot of coffee and then make my bed while it's brewing. I started that habit when I bought a new coffeemaker back in 2012. I can't remember the last time I didn't make my bed. I'm going to guess it was 2012.
It's the same kind of thinking as the Apartment Therapy landing strip. Your stuff gets scattered because you don't have a place for it when you walk in the door. Create a "landing strip" for that stuff and the mess never gets created in the first place. Similarly, create habits that fit what you're already doing and the chores get done.
