We posted about open shelving in bathrooms previously on Apartment Therapy, but we love the idea of using the shelves to enhance the decor. We absolutely adore the aquatic themed bathroom in the first photo. A collection of starfish, coral, and shells is what you would be surrounded by when taking a bath.
We love the aqua green and white color combo. The second bathroom is much more toned down. The top shelves are used to display vintage cameras and the bottom ones are a perfect storage for towels and other bath necessities. What kind of collections do you display in your bathroom?

The first one is beautiful... but I dread to think about dusting it, or what my kittens would do to it. Death From Above would suck a lot more if the kitten was jumping into a bath with you.
I have over two dozen conch shells that I've collected mostly from yard sales and auctions over the years. I love how they look all lined up on a shelf of natural, pale wood against a light, neutral wall color. But so far I do not have a room where this kind of display would fit in, drat it.
Man I wish I had a bathroom as spacious as these. Then I'd be down with open shelves, closed shelves or even no shelves!
I think the shells display would be great if it was only one accent wall and not the entire bathroom.
Definitely a dusting nightmare!
I have an amazing collection of fraying bathtowels, half-full shampoo bottles and out of date magazines in my bathrooms...
Vintage cameras in the bathroom? Don't know about that, but I love the beadboard cathedral ceiling and the sliding door to the bedroom.
The bathroom in the first photo looks impractical, for so many reasons... Guess they never take showers? And the dust... the mind boggles...
That first bathroom bothers me. I don't know what it is but it doesn't appear relaxing. Maybe it is the mint green wall color?
that's way too much "stuff" for a bathroom
I couldn't relax in #1. I'd be too afraid of brushing against a wall and dislodging a fragile shell or starfish to fall to the floor and shatter. I like the collection, but the shelves are too shallow. #2 is very soothing. I don't know about cameras in a room subject to humidity though.
That first room is too busy for me. Not to mention the dusting and knocking stuff off the wall issues. And is humidity OK for vintage cameras?
Nice! As long as you acknowledge that you will have to maintain this decor (i.e. dust) BEFORE you put it in, I say, "good choice!"
geez. some of you must be very clumsy or have abnormally large booties. can't you maneuver through a bathroom without knocking stuff off the walls?

I have a half-bath with open shelving, and I am filling the shelves with framed photos of family and friends. It lets me display them while keeping them out of the rest of my house (less clutter), and gives people something to look at while they're in there. Because it's a half-bath, humidity is not an issue for the photos or glass.
