We're really digging Manda's kitchen makeover--bright and cheerful with tons of open storage solutions. But what we love most about these organizing ideas is that they can translate easily into any home.
1. Adding a shelf directly underneath the kitchen cabinets utilizes vertical space while keeping the countertops free for prepping food. Whether you store decorative objects or kitchen tools, we think open shelving is great.
2. A stainless steel wall rack not only looks chic and shiny, it's perfect for holding jars and containers that need to be accessed frequently.
3. Hooks are a fabulous addition to any room--especially in the kitchen for holding tea towels, aprons, and reusable grocery bags.
4. Manda utilizes another open shelf directly underneath kitchen cabinets--this time to display cookbooks and recipe holders.

Nomade Express Slee...
Love your kitchen! Gorgeous storage solutions.
Hey AT, I think these open shelves are great. I have never been able to figure out how to attach them in a way that would actually support all those cookbooks. A post showing how to do that when you get a chance would be super helpful!
The stainless shelves in pic 2 could probably double as a warming rack for bagels as well with that six slot dualit underneath ;)
WORMY--
I agree! I wish AT had more Do-It-Yourself instructions!
I've installed floating wall shelves before, and the way they support all the weight is by using long bolts. First you screw the bolts into studs, leaving a couple of inches jutting out of the wall. Then you drill corresponding holes into the back of the shelf, and slide the shelf onto the bolts. (You just need to make sure that the exposed length of bolt is more than half the depth of the shelf for stability.) Voila!
Thanks HCV Mama! I know what I will be trying this weekend!
I would LOVE to have a shelf just for cookbooks. We don't have any storage for them now and their current location in the coat closet isn't ideal!
i LOVE the idea of open shelving in the kitchen. We're in a very restrictive apartment right now, and I took the cabinet doors off a few weeks ago. It isn't designer, but it helps our very stark kitchen to have some depth and warmth. When I have my own kitchen, I'm definitely going OPEN all the way through. It's really so much easier to put things away and see at a glance what's in the cupboards before a grocery trip. All my dry goods are in jars, and they look great!
I love the concept of open shelving. Could anyone tell me how to re-create the look of Tyler Florence's kitchen where he hangs all his copperware on a rod. Would a curtain rod do or is it too flimsy to hold up all the copper?
I have a lot of copperware as well and would love to display them.
Open shelving isn't the best idea in earthquake country. Nice to look at though.
You've staged the shelves perfectly. Lovely!
@madchaka: Seriously, you will drive yourself mad if all of your decorating ideas have to be earthquake proof!
The open shelving that is mentioned in this post has a couple bowls, a salt and pepper shaker or two and some books. Would it really be all that bad if those objects fell onto your countertop or kitchen floor during the "big one?"
How timely! I just signed a lease on a new apt with ZERO kitchen cabinets (it has other positives though!) so open shelving seems like a reality for me. As far as storing glassware on open shelves, is it too cluttery to attach hanging under-shelf wine glass racks to a shelf with drinking glasses above?
The shelves are great. Did something similar in my own kitchen on a smaller scale and it made a huge difference (which really seemed outsized to the change I'd made).
Overall I love the colors, too--warm and homey--but that wallpaper is just too 70's. I would be clawing my eyes out after about five minutes of staring at it.
(I think I'm still scarred from that ugly red roses wallpaper plastic in my bedroom growing up. It took something like six years for my parents to get around to scraping it off.)
burnttoast, I've cleaned up enough smashed jars and dishes from earthquakes to last me a lifetime.
I love the open shelves and I love the shelf-space over the stove. How original and wonderful!
The open shelving looks great without being too cluttered. They complement the minimalistic kitchen cabinet scheme very well. My kitchen is pretty dark so I'm jealous of how bright it looks with natural lighting.
What kind of range is that? I've never seen one quite like it!
I should have been more specific.
Can anyone identify the exact make of the range? It appears to be a 24" double-oven range (look at second picture).
Although I'm not from NYC, I have seen a slide-in range before. ;)
