Does anyone know of a exersaucer type contraption that is made out of wood and fabric instead of plastic? Our son is 4 months old and loves to stand. We know that he loves a neighbor's exersaucer, but we are trying to keep away from all the plastic kids stuff. Any ideas would be appreciated!
i'm not familiar with any "exersaucer" type items, but i've seen the door-way hanging jumpers made out of fabric - most have plastic parts, but not all. they don't have all the bells & whistles to keep the baby occupied, but my nephews and nieces *love* to jump in them. very good for building strength in the legs. i seem to remember one from a german company made out of wool felt.. in think it was kind of expensive but i don't remember the exact price or name... will look and repost if i find it.
We are plastic haters, too. But, the exersaucers are a must-have, as ugly as they are. The good news is that you will not need it for too long.
grr... not having any luck finding that german company... what about making something? you could use a low wood table - like a kids play/craft table - and cut out a hole in the center and make a seat out of strong fabric - like canvas or denim... attaching it would be the biggest challenge, but some sort of grommet/peg situation might work. or strong bolts to attach the fabric right to the table. or you could sew the fabric seat around a wooden ring that's bigger than the hole in the table so it can't slip through... then the table top can be the play surface for the activity toys. this is really making me want to try building it, but i think i'll wait until i have a kid to use it before i spend the time and money. :)
I never had one of those jumper things, but I think I remember reading that they are actually bad for babies. Pelvic or hip development? Or bad on the knees? I don't know. You might want to research it.
I agree that the exersaucer was a lifesaver, and the DIY idea is very cool if you have the time to do it. (But you'll need an exersaucer to put the baby in while you build it.)
