I think it is down as well.
How can it be that the great God Google is not all powerful? We're totally stuck - off our email communication, calendar, etc.... Yikes!
Hmmm...my gmail is OK.
I'm thinking of getting a tempurpedic mattress for a room and board bed I have my eye on. I think I'd definitely use the 'low profile' platform they sell even though room and board says not to use a boxspring. Do people like these mattresses? Experiences with them?
I bought 2 of these chairs to use in my dining room at the head/foot of the table:
http://www.overstock.com/?page=proframe&prod_id=2107614
They are really big, but they work. I need to get 4 "regular" dining room chairs for the sides. Any style suggestions? I should mention, I think Parson chairs are the work of the devil.
Thanks!! xoxo
Meg:
Rent a hotel room for a night that has a temperpedic bed. I did that and then decided against it. It made me sweat like crazy and I felt like jello - not good jello in it.
Meg, we've got some pretty good coverage of these types of mattresses. People generally love them. See these links:

Marimekko store coming to DC area! This is about 3 miles from my place in DC!
Might have something to do with Google just being sued for 1 Billion dollars by Vaicom.
Thanks for the bed links!
Meg,
My parents bought a Tempurpedic mattress, kept it for about a week, and then returned it. They said it's very difficult to move around on the mattress because you sink into it.
My calendar works?? Viacom are putting all their programming on joost, so they're suing everyone else to make sure people get on the joost train. (which looks like it'll be cool)
My gmail and google seem to be working fine right now. Everything ok up there in NY?
Maxwell,
I think Meg's suggestion of trying one out at a hotel is a great one. Mattresses are such a personal choice - not a selection by the majority.
I know tempurpedics very popular at AT - they are IMHO an AT status item (like Dwell sheets) -- but not everyone likes them. In my experience, they are particularly uncomfortable for people who are very warm at night. Personally, I wanted one until I slept on one. I am a light sleeper and tend to move around when I wake up - rolling over at night was irritating as the mattress slooooooowly adjusted to my shape which meant it took longer to fall asleep again. AUGGGHHHHH!! I ended up with a high-end latex foam that works great for me.
My point ....It's personal. I don't think anyone who loves a temperpedic is wrong - but I don't think anyone who doesn't love them is wrong either.
Personally, I think Meg's hotel 'try-out' is a great way to test a mattress (a very expensive purchase you live with hopefully for a long time)- the cost of the hotel is nominal in comparison to the price of the mattress. And you get to spoil yourself at the same time!!
I absolutely love my tempurpedic mattress!
Hi all,
I ordered some furniture, paid in full from a store here in philly. (about 700 dollars) I canceled the order last friday but they said since they have a store credit only policy but if the manufacturer had not shipped yet maybe they could simply cancel it and I could get all my money back. A
After checking with the manufacturer they caught the item before it shipped however since it had been pulled from the warehouse, even if not shipped, they would be charged with a restocking fee of 200 total for the two chairs. Should I have to pay that? Or even the store I ordered from for that matter? The manyfacturer is adesso.
Thought I would try this again. I need a man with a van for Saturday or Sunday...to transport three bookshelves. Can anyone recommend someone in New York who would be willing to transport them from Great Neck to Manhattan? Thanks!
there was like this thread yesterday on the bertoya chair and i cant find it anymore.... the search feature on this site is like the shut door button on the elevator it doesnt do anything...
about that bertoya chair and the eemes chair that was so similar i was reading once that eemes and bertoya began working together but then they had a big fight and eeames basically ripped of bertoyas idea on wireframe chairs. anyone else know about this? i cant look at that book anymore because i took cure 2 and like maxwell told me to put all my books on the curb. that was like the cooolest thing i ever did 'cause books made a lot of clutter and they were very confusing with so many ideas and stuff in them. it was like this site in the bad old days when anyone could say anything and you didnt know what to think. now its like so easy and simple because everyone is saying the same thing and we all agree with each other except maybe on wether to use like lite red or liter red in the foyer.
it seems like design has a lot of this ripping off and ego stuff going on and not like questioning authority, like georgie nelson putting his name on everything even if he didnt design it. or like people saying one thing and doing another. does design make you dishonest?
Meg--
My physical therapist told me they are bad for people with back/neck problems--something about how your muscle fibers keep twitching because you never really find the "bottom" in these mattresses. My personal experience backed that up, as I just never really felt relaxed on it. I returned mine after two weeks.
Carla: my brother has used a man-with-a-van off craigslist a few times now. i'd look there first!
just curious--you need to be able to spell what you're looking for correctly if you expect the search feature to work correctly! try bertoia and eames instead.
I cannot tell you how uncomfortable and hot Tempur-Pedic beds are. I'd strongly suggest testing one out first, as suggested above. I know some people like them, but I can't for the life of me figure out why.
Hi all, for the restocking fee on an unshipped item - apparently adesso is not the one charging it, nor is the shop - it is the distributor in the middle. I don't want to pay but I don't want to mess him up either. sigh -advice?
Just Curious -- Having red in the foyer is clearly making you antagonistic. May I suggest a peaceful pink instead?
wende u r such a sweetie u see the best in everyone... i bet u even liked that first jonathan who was so mean to everybody (not jonathanb who we all like and respect totally) and that ranting design dabbler.
Yes, dear Just Curious, I am imbued with love for all personkind, as well as many varieties of small pet, and there's some evidence that I feel a kind of St. Francis-like warmth toward the mold in the bathroom grout, given my utter lack of enthusiasm for eradicating it. I awaken joyously each morning to the sound of the vultures singing in the palos verdes.
Pink, always pink. Pink is the new lime rickey green.
Just Curious
If I had any decency, I'd blush.
Wende you are awesome. I might have to paint my bathroom pink now. With vultures.
Just Curious,
All you need to do with the search function is spell the item properly.
Bertoia is spelled B E R T O I A
and the post is here:

As for trying out a mattress before buying, i totally agree. That's what we did. We chose the DWR Sonno mattress in firm - which makes a difference - and we bought it on sale.
Personally, I like the memory foam of the Sonno a lot, but I can't say it's "better" than the regular firm mattress we sleep on when we go out to the country on weekends. They are both really nice, but, yes, they are different. I like the Sonno at night and I like the regular in the morning.
Am I just not monogamous in my core? Am i just a typical man?
maxwell thank u. and i dont think u are typical, u are a hot, hot hottie. 2 bad sk grabbed u thats a bummer.
jonathanb like i said someplace u r a noble sweetie who has sacrificed so much for maxwell and u kill me with your jokes. p2 watch out your not going to stay king of AT comedy for long.
noone has told me about the fight about wireframe chairs. who invented them, bertoia or eames? and do you all think design = dishonesty? the cooper hewett in nyc had a show where they said design not= art. but like because u can make a quick buck on design does it make designers dishonest? and because design is so much about how you look does it make design people shallow and a little stupid. like not being able to handle other views?
wende i dont always get it rite away. which one is the moldy grout that u luv, design dabbler or jonathan?
Hey Dana ,
I can't tell if you need a refund that they need to authorize or you are simply feeling bad about stopping payment on something, but I have a little can of Whup A** and it is full of this:
Do. Not. Pay. Thier job is to serve you, not the other way around. If you paid by credit or debit card or check, you can cancel or dispute the payment. 200 dollars to take 2 chairs off a shelf is nuts , you could BUY two entire secondhand chairs with that much.
If it took two men 1.5 hours at 30 bucks per hour each to get those chairs down and up, that is still only 180! And you know those guys aren't making that much - and they make the real money off large multiple and bulk orders - they are trying to charge you because they think they can, its that simple.
Even if they won't take it off a bill, they likely won't put it to collection and it will not affect your credit report. If they do send it to collection, you can appeal and /or and pay it in 30 days if worst comes to worst. Its just money, not a litmus test on your niceness or worth.
No matter what, retailer, distributor, etc, their job is to perform a customer service, their overhead is designed to cover these things. Don't worry, don't get played, hang in and don't get hosed! If you were a favored client, a large corporation, or a fancy interior decorator, they would NEVER be trying to do this to you. I suspect that they are messing with you because you are a one time retail customer and they think you dont know any better.
I wouldn't go any further in a long detailed conversations with them about THEIR shipping issues or who exactly needs the money, that's how you get TMI from them about excuses and what THEIR problem is.
IMHOP, you need to focus on YOUR issue and YOUR needs and what they are going to do for YOU : You. Are.Not Going. To Pay. Period. Just think of the month of health insurance, roundtrip discounted airplane ticket, part of a rent or mortgage , fancy dinner for your beloved parents- WHATEVER else you can use this 200 bucks for and don't get hosed. Just get firm, mean, bad a**, and stop caring about how they feel about you. Stop trying to get them to like you,or being non confrontational, or being a polite lady they can just whack charges onto, their job is to deal with people in customer service, cancellations are part of thier business, and they need to do their job. Its not emotional, it's just a simple fact and they need to get with the program. Period.
Phew!
Sometimes , esp with women, biz people try to not do things they should do and then make you feel badly about it. I hope the above helps you take a deep breath and get the strength to to not get messed with.
I have had my own businness for years, I am very nice and respectful, and care about workers and other companies but every once in a while someone tries to rip me off, or make it my fault that they wont do thier job, and the can comes out. And it works like a charm, they back right down. They are being bullies and you can stand up to them.
Sometimes I think it's the only language they understand. Its a hard thing to get tough, and I feel guilty even posting this, but its important to take a stand- esp in home decor issues, where the retail customer can be an easy mark.
I sincerely hope this helps, if it is too inflexible, obviously just use what works for you within your own comfort zone. Good luck!
Dana-
Typically, when you pay for furniture you sign something, usually with a LOT of ifne print, outlining exactly the scenario you describe, and things like if they charge restocking fees (fairly common) and if they do, how they calculate it (typically 20%).
I say consider yourself lucky you were able to get the refund you did... that was pretty late in the game to cancel an order. Or, if store credit is indeed an option for you, use that to negotiate. Chances are they will give you full price if you accept store credit.

Please do not get Sculptor With A Van. He's a lazy, cranky old cuss who hates his life and will threaten to walk off the job in the middle of it if you point out that he is NOT being the kind of careful that you expected him to be with your TV with the very carefully sculpted bas relief proscenium.
That posting should go in the Curtis: Greatest Hits compilation.
Just Curious is Design Dabbler.
The easiest way to change your posting style is to ape a teenager on IM
henrietta r u the real one or the fake one? or are you dd trying to confuse us?
re: Man With A Van
How about this guy? He does flat rate IKEA trips too . . .

Thanks, but how I wish I could have had the imagination to have completely made up that story. Alas, 'tis true, and the healing is only in the telling and the prevention of future angst of others.
And if you saw the van, itself, was like you would absolutely blanche if you saw it approaching your building.
One thing it gave me was the determination to never look at my life through that guy's lens, no matter what fate befalls me.
RE: "Hiring a guy with van on CRAIG'S LIST." Haven't any of you people seen SILENCE OF THE LAMBS?
A better idea is to go to a trunk rental place and rent a truck/van. It might cost more but it's a lot safer.

Hmm, interesting theory about Just Curious. I must confess I have wondered whether her eccentric style is real or not.
The problem, "Henrietta", is that you have no credibility. The true Henrietta was a straight shooter, a pillar of rectitude. When she quit AT after the purges two weeks ago she said it was permanent. She didn't strike me as somebody who would go back on her word.
So, you're fake. That's not, by itself, fatal around here. Many of us have fake identities, usually to protect our privacy. It's OK to be "abc" or "Leslie in Adams Morgan" or "Design Dabbler". It's even OK to be "violetsrose" in some postings and "cassandra" in others, especially when you have a particularly nasty piece of invective to unleash. But, it's another matter to take on the identity of a known character on AT simply to make him/her look bad and confuse the rest of us. That takes real malice.
Just a little fun James.
Lighten up.
Perhaps there are, in fact, two separate Henriettas.
Ah, such a wicked web!
I think Just Curious is texting in on a Palm Pilot or Crackberry.
