anyone from portland, or on this site? my best friend (since 4th grade, sniff) just moved to portland, and her shower...er...has no shower! it's just got a spout for the bathtub! (she's in the dorms, but it's apparently like an apartment) when i lived in France, a lot of people didn't have a spout for the bath, plus a built in shower head, but some sort of attachment that you could either hold it in your hand and rinse off that way, or pin it up to the wall in some way. does anyone know if this will be too much work, or something she can get at a hardware store and hook up herself?

Depends on how hand she is but this is not that difficult, especially of the plunbing is not too old. She needs to replace the tub spout with a diverter spout for this purpose, which has a threaded outlet that any hand-held shower can attach to. You can add a wall mount for the hand held for hands free showering.

The diverter is inexpensive and, if the plumbing is in good shape and of relatively recent vintage, it simply unscrews, add some teflon tape, and replace. An example is here

Did anyone else notice that the affordable studio renovation in the Times today (also in the House and Home Roundup) was an entry in this year's Smallest Coolest?

Anyone have good ideas for a narrow (9.5" or narrower) landing strip? Room and Board's Slim Console Table is one option, but I would love to find something that with the same dimensions but with attractive shelving underneath, or maybe something that attaches to the wall and has a shelf and hooks. I actually started looking a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't found anything that I love.

As those of us who are supposed to be curing should all be thinking about this, has anyone found something great for their space?

Wow, moira -- sharp eyes! I read that and didn't make the association at all! The smallest, coolest contest has such a limitation on photos that you get only the narrowest view into a place.

any ole drill with a small diameter drill bit will do just fine. Or if you wanna get fancy, break out the Dremel.
