White Enamel Four-P...
Happy New Year AT
I have two Danish Modern chairs to recover:
seeking a few yards of fabric and your favorite budget upholstery workers in Brooklyn.
btw, I'm looking for the place that's like Mood, but for upholstery fabric
THX
People may have already seen my bedroom area picture as it was posted on another link, but I thought this would be a good location to put it up:
http://picasaweb.google.com/sudarshana.ghosh/Bedroom?feat=directlink
Mood has upholstery fabric downstairs. Though you can use non-standard upholstery fabrics.
I picked up the fabric there for a mcm lounge chair and fabrikate made the cushion covers. Price was reasonable and experience fantastic. I'll post pics tomorrow.
Speaking of bedrooms, I live in a studio and I'm actually thinking of getting new bedding on my Murphy bed, and changing the very elaborate wall treatment behind the headboard of it, which looks KIND of like the underside of a canopy thing. I'm thinking of doing an upholstered vinyl thing there, instead, which just matches the finish of the cabinet, instead of matching the spread, like I did last time.
Ahhh, the eternal debate: duvets vs. comforters. I have a question. I currently own a comforter (Calvin Klein: Bamboo Flowers), which I love. However, I'm thinking of changing up the color scheme in my room. Could I theoretically buy a duvet cover, and use it over my comforter? Or do I need to buy a new duvet duvet cover, or a new comforter?
Anokha, as long as the duvet cover is opaque enough to fully conceal the print on the comforter you currently own, you can totally get away with not buying a new (plain) comforter. No problem!
If you can't find something you like at Mood (they don't have many large graphic print options), the "Supplies" section of Etsy has a lot of fabric. It may not be upholstery weight though and there's always the danger of buying fabric without being able to see it person. If you want to upholster a large sofa, I wouldn't do Etsy, but if you just need to cover a small stool or bench, it can be a more inexpensive option than New York fabric stores.
I'd love to see something about incorporating a TV into bedroom decor. I know ATers hate TVs in bedrooms, but in real life, there is often someone else sleeping in the living room (a baby, or a roommate). In my open-plan apartment, the bedroom is the only available place to watch TV without everyone else in the household having to be bothered by it.
So I could really use some design advice.
Thanks, Anna! I guess it never occurred to me that I might have a problem with opaqueness (is that a word?), but I think that makes sense. Next up: finding a duvet cover!
THx for the recs...they are chairs that will get alot of use, so it has to be hearty fabric
Elsewhere i was pointed to the LES

Isn't Zarin Fabrics the place owned by the lady from "Real Housewives of New York City"? (I'm sad that I know that)
If anybody is looking for One Bedroom apartment, I just posted mine on Craigslist, please check it out.
It really is a nice apartment.
Thank you!!!

Sorry, wrong address for One Bedroom

Thanks!
Does anyone know approximately what it might cost for work to have a small (4 x 4 1/2 floor space) bathroom retiled? I'm going to get quotes, of course, but I'd like to know what ballpark I'm in....
Anybody know a good source (preferably online) for interior door knobs/levers? I love the stuff at www.vallievalli.com but could never come close to affording it. I'm looking for something pretty simple, modern, and midrange. Thanks!
Aaron, please help!
So far, you are the only person from AT who has ever responded to my request --
Ever since the server change in December, I can't load the AT site on my regular computer -- I get a "bad request" message. When I try to access kitchn, the pictures don't download. I've tried your suggested fix (as did my husband), I've flushed the cache (numerous times), I've tried troubleshooting it myself, but can't come up with anything.
I'm on OSX and Safari -- it doesn't affect the laptop (which I rarely have custody of), just the main computer.
I've tried sending emails to the support people, but they never reply.
Any ideas....?
mschatelaine:
Probably you have already done this but
1.) dump cache for your browser and restart safari
2.) try firefox (free download)
3.) back up your bookmarks file and then find the preferences for safari and dump them, restart and open safari again
Safari prefs are in HD> users> home(your user)>Library>Safari folder. before you dump this whole folder copy the bookmarks.plist to your desktop or somewhere else for safe keeping.
Good luck!
Anokha ,
As Door16 said you can put in any comforter blanket in the Duvet cover. You can get a really bold patten (look at targets Isac mizrahi) to liven up your room. I love how you can change the look and feel of the room weekly by changing your beding.
You will love shopping for bed linen at Century 21 (the store across from the World Trade Center site)
They always have last seasons calvin Klein RL, etc deeply insanely crazy discounted. I get the CK king size sheet for under $10. The duvet covers for $50ish for king which is dirt cheap for a designer brand.
Guido
ABC upholstery fabric department.

Around the corner form ABC is another Upholstery fabric store, It discounted.
I actually purchased fabric at this store when i redid my sofa, i can not remember the name for the life of me. Someone help me!
@mschatelaine,
Please email me at scott AT apartmenttherapy DOT com if you'd like to follow up. @videonerdann's suggestions are good ones.
The first thing to do would be to try a different web browser. I highly recommend installing and using Firefox.
If a different browser works on the same computer, then there's some problem with your primary browser. You should try disabling or removing any toolbars you have installed, emptying your cookies & browser cache and/or "resetting" your browser to factory defaults. On Internet Explorer 7, you'd click on "Tools," select "Internet Options," choose the "Advanced" tab an click the "Reset" button and then the "Reset" button again.
If neither browser works, then something on your computer is blocking traffic from apartmenttherapy.com (images on the kitchn are often delivered from the apartmenttherapy.com domain name). This could have many causes and I'd recommend finding someone to help you fix this on your computer.
Hope that helps.
@mschatelaine,
I see from
this thread that you're running Safari on OS X. Have you tried resetting Safari? Go to the "Safari" drop-down menu and select "Reset Safari." Make sure all the boxes are checked and click "Reset."
I'm making me entire house lovely at the moment because I have a rental inspection coming up in a week and a half and it's good pressure to go everything done.
In the bedroom I'm clearing out everything that's shouldn't belong there - art things, papers, kitchen things, big storage boxes and stuff like that.
I have the ikea hemnes four poster bed http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/beds-mattresses/hemnes-fourposter-bed-frame-at-ikea-029616
with good quality white sheets. My boyfriend and I found a matching pair of white bedside drawers on the the side of the road which we are going to paint white with black accents on the moulding.
I have recently bought 2 new white wardrobes from ikea (ANEBODA) http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/90121762
It's an old victorian terrace house with dark wood and a beautiful darkwood fireplace, but not much light. I think that keeping it light and open will make it enjoyable and relaxing to sleep in.
Open question to renters: Now that the rental market in the city is in freefall, are you planning on moving to take advantage of the lower rents? Or are you staying put due to fears about the economy and your personal finances?
Is the rental market really in freefall here? I wasn't aware.
I plan on staying in my apartment because I love everthing about it. I do look forward to getting my lease renewal in another year and a half though with the hope that the increase isn't substantial (due to the economy).
Suziegoombs, if you are paying market rate, you should definitely try to negotiate a reduction upon renewal. The city alone is projected to lose 243,000 jobs this year, over a third of the bloodletting coming from Wall Street. The brutal reality is that the days of NY being a locus for ultra-high paying financial jobs is quickly coming to an end. Things have gotten so bad that not only are rents way down, landlords are offering free months as well as paying for the broker fee. Things are getting so bad that we may actually (finally) see an end to rent regulation, which automatically expires once the vacancy rate in the city reaches 5%.
has anyone had a starck louis ghost chair?
thoughts on quality/comfort/etc. before i buy yet another chair.
thanks!
I've been living (renting) in the same apartment for many years now and comparing to one a 1 bdrm/1 bath... Even studio apartments are going for more rent than what I'm paying in my 2 bdrm/2bth w/a terrace/view.
I'll stay put. I'm also not living in the city, further up the line, if that makes a difference.
also a perhaps silly question, though whenver i google it i can never seem to figure it out. where does one buy a plain duvet? or is a duvet just a plain white comforter? whenver i google duvets all i find is covers, never just plain duvets. suggestions on where to get a nice plain one?
^ Research comforters. A duvet is a fancy word for comforter.
Try Macy's (or any other department store) on a sale day, Bed Bath and Beyond or even discount stores like TJ Maxx and Century 21 (if you're in NY).
For online shopping, I've ordered bedding from http://www.linensource.com and been pretty happy with my orders.
For glurf: Simon's Hardware and Bath (in Manhattan) for modern or contemporary styled hardware — they also have a website (which doesn't even begin to show the range of what they carry):
http://www.simonsny.com/
simons hardware has some seriously awesome (mmm, pricey) stuff...but beware their website, as i was once told it's not updated to reflect their inventory.
can anyone identify the bedspread from this post? it's shown in the photo on the last row, three in from the right, with the bright colored stripes.

Little online poll:
How often do you paint the interior of your home? I just painted my bedroom at the end of August but now I want to change the color of my bedding for the spring/summer. Am I crazy to change it again in less than a year?
http://www.movingtrucks.us/hand-truck-636.jpg
While most people like to move in the spring and summer, flooding season sometimes causes one to uproot and such has been the case for my husband and I who were living in a rental suite.
We'll be moving in the coming few days and we're happy for the change but how can we most quickly make this new house a home? I wondered if anyone out there had any tips in decorating and getting a fresh new start!

That is some sort of wool "camp" (campING, not kitsch!)/Hudson Bay blanket. I'd start at Pendleton Mills...
http://www.pendleton-usa.com/jump.jsp?itemID=675&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C6%2C130&iProductID=675
or Woolrich...

And zzzap--
If you are liking Louis Ghost chairs and Pendleton's blankets, can't wait to see your end product! Sounds like fun!!
hejiranyc - Thanks for the info. "Market rate" for my apartment is around $2300 (which is rediculous for the brooklyn neighborhood I live in) and I pay $1275. Should be interesting.
Hi,
Market rents are down, as I just listed a great LOFT STUDIO all new reno on Craigslist, this time of year is very slow too, come spring prices go up again.. here is my listing for a really good deal
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/abo/992920933.html
Seems like a simple question so forgive my ignorance - where in Manhattan can I get stuffing for throw pillows?
The Louis Ghost is quite comfortable for a hard chair; I like mine. And if you're in NYC, buying one is an excellent excuse to join MoMA - if you use the new-member 20% discount at the design store on it, the membership pretty much pays for itself.
parrishnut, uh, keep dreaming about those apartment prices going up again in the spring. Did you receive the memo about the recession, deflation and the decimation of Wall Street? Were you counting on a spike of young new hirees? Ha ha ha ha ha...
grtdrg -
I'm not sure exactly how soon, but there's about to be Michael's craft store opening this year on 97th Street and Columbus Avenue, right next to the new Whole Foods. That's right around the corner from me, and I'm pretty excited about both of them.
That may not help you at the moment, but, by the way, Bed, Bath and Beyond has so many different sizes and shapes of pillows that they may have what you need.
hejira--
I think parrishnut was referring to the basic tenet of real estate not moving as quickly in winter as in spring, not a general trend shift. Which for some reason you find terribly amusing for some reason...

Sorry - jsut saw your question - the color is actuall Magenta - 2077 from Benjamin Moore.
