Any recommendations for where to get a simple vanity mirror/cabinet for the bathroom. I want it to be about 30" across, thin silver rim around the mirror. Nothing elaborate and ideally nothing that costs a small fortune. Any ideas on where to start looking? Thanks

To SYB_in_DC -- You can try Pyramid Atlantic in Silver Spring across from Whole Foods if you're willing to cross the border. It's metro and bus accessible, but they have limited hours.

Anyhoo, the art is by local artists and some is reasonably priced. I've gotten a couple of pieces there.

Any ideas of how to hide a large wire pet cage? We have a 42" cage for our rottweiler, am are looking for ways to better conceal it in our rowhouse.

I looked at the pet cages in the past, but they are either too expensive and aren't made for larger dogs.

B'morerowhs--what about doing a slipcover? I did a quasi slipcover for a bookshelf--this would take more fabric, but you could do a simple canvas just hemmed at the edges and velcroed on at each end. This way, you could remove to wash. I'm sure you could do some construction as well...but that's beyond my expertise!

Any ideas of where we can find a reasonably priced copper-topped coffee table? thanks!

Just FYI, not sure if it's been covered here or not. Room & Board purchased the Rapture Church on 14th and T Streets NW. THey have 60 days to cancel the contract. There is a small movement of people who are writing R&B to tell them they are not wanted. (THey want a comedy club instead. Not kidding). If you are interested in having R&B, you might want to shoot them a quick email to balance out the negative ones. Of course a 4-line summary is oversimplifying. but it boils down to whether there is interest in having room & board or not. I am literally the closest house to the site and frankly think anything is better than a vacant building.... don't care one way or another if it's a cafeteria, a yoga studio, a comedy club (though really), or a cool furniture store. My guess is that design-minded people would be interested. i can't believe any decent business is willing to dive into the morass of whining and regulation that is dc, but they've shown an interest and I personally like their stores and the idea of this being a furniture and design district.

There should be room for everyone in the hood. As sara.h's second link says, "the former home of the Central Union Mission at 14th and R" is another cavernous space that's available. I'm very excited about both the store and the cafe/yoga studio/whatever/et al being on 14th. I love Tryst and would like to see a Tryst-like cafe on 14th. I think it's so cool that they're trying to develop that building into a multi-use locally-occupied space. All these uses fit that street, which is both a furniture and design district and a theater district. Every new thing that's been coming in I'm thrilled about. Yes Organic Market just opened at 14th & V and I can hardly contain my glee at the new, close-by competition for Whole Foods.

Eastern Market - although I haven't been down since it has gotten cold...but they usually have neat stuff, even when it is cold

The Culture Shop in Takoma, DC - just off of Takoma Metro station.
Art museum gift shops - the Portrait Gallery has some neat stuff.

And if you can make it out to the burbs
Zei Gallerie in Tysons Corner Center
and Home Goods - everywhere. One of my favs! :-)

I'm curious if anyone here is planning on renting their home out for inauguration. I've seen all kinds of crazy prices on Craig's list ($12,500 a night for a 2 bedroom?!). I'm wondering if this could possibly be for real and if I should try to get money for my place in Eastern Market.

Thoughts?

Answers to a couple of things:
Good used furniture on 14th st NW, near S--Hunted House and others. As well, Millenium is nice. Also in Catonsville is an awesome store called Home Anthology.
Art--Corcoran Museum is having their student/staff works for sale soon. Also, there are a number of galleries in 14th/U NW area to check out.
Renting for Inauguration- I am doing it, though with a friend of the family's family. So, yes, real actual people are doing it~!
Mirrors--Have you tried the Brass Knob? Also, maybe Community Forklift in Hyattsville?

I second the eastern market nomination for art. Also check out Good Wood (U and 15th? 16th?), they always have some interesting and reasonably priced things.

Along with dcexplorer, I'm curious to know if anyone has a recommendation on thrift stores in NW DC? (or, say, metro-accessible MD and VA?)

I have been searching for a ceiling fixture for a couple months now. I fell in love with Stonegate Designs' Semi-Flush Classique Pendant, shown here... looking for 20" or larger.
