my plumbing backed up. it was horrific. the plumbers had to come out twice because after they cleared the problem in my immediate vicinity, the main line backed up. i spent the afternoon bleaching my bathroom floor. good times.
Rain! You LA folk have rain -- we in New England have ice storms with massive power outages (mine only lasted about 24 hours, some around here are still out from Thursday night!) The midwest has blizzards. This is one lousy nasty week for weather!
SherryBinNH: of course blizzards and ice storms are much worse than a typical LA rain storm, but the thing to note is due to the rash of wild fires that blazed across Southern California this summer (and the year before, and the year before that, and so on and so on), every rain storm is serious business because of the threat of flash floods and land slides. We had hell on earth fires scorching houses to embers, also causing mass evacuations and power outages (including my own mom's place), while now you've got hell frozen over now on the other side of the country. Both cases suck.
That being said, I truly feel some deep sympathy for those of you suffering out there when I can currently see blue skies out my own window, and hope the power outtages depart with the storms ASAP! LA, like the Mediterranean, is not used to extreme weather, so cut us some slack ;)

Downplaying the rain in So Cal is fairly common with people who aren't from here.
As gregory stated, it is as serious a safety threat as blizzards that devistate other parts of the country. When much of So Cal has gone nearly a year w/ dangerously little rain, the land and mud slides can be and often are devistating, even more so when wildfires have destroyed vegetation that is often our first natural line of defense against flooding and slides.
So please, before you downgrade someplace elses weather related problems, do some research.
Every time it rains, my house smells like dirt.
Our party is tomorrow night and the forecast calls for 6 or more inches of snow! I'm trying to keep up a positive attitude and hope that all the prep and cooking isn't for naught. People tend to stay off the roads during snow storms. Snow be damned though. I have a new party dress and killer shoes and at least I won't be out driving in the snow. :-/
