My stepdaughter, 9, wants a purple room, but everything we've found so far that she likes is pink and extremely girly (rosettes and lace). Is there a way to make a purple and pink color combo sophisticated? Visual examples are greatly appreciated.
glurf, have you checked out pottery barn teen, if only for inspiration? i didn't see anything specifically purple and pink, but i'll bet you could find some ideas, at least...
How about playing with polka dots and/or stripes, maybe with wall decals or paint? Then maybe for a bedspread you could do a quilt with lots of white background and pink and purple details. In my head this is looking pretty cool, but I'm not sure I'm communicating it well. Keep in mind you're reading advice from someone whose wedding colors were red and fuchsia.

A while back, Ohdeedoh posted my tutorial for making nonpermanent fabric wall silhouettes for children's rooms. You can see it here:

At that time I mentioned that I planned to make a hummingbird version for my living room. I finally did that so I wanted to share a link to photos:

Also, I know a lot of folks here are interested in modern doll houses for their kids. I found a 1973 book at the used bookshop the other day with five different plans for modern-looking doll houses (some more modern than others). The plans aren't super detailed, but the book gives you the layout and the basic instructions. You can get the ISBN and see a couple photos I took of the book here:
