Open & Uncluttered Kitchen Shelving: Get the Look

Open & Uncluttered Kitchen Shelving: Get the Look

John is a talented architect and his wife, Jenny, is an excellent cook — it's not surprising that they have an enviable kitchen. John created the space to play up the home's natural light and leafy views, and his design for open, ceiling-mounted shelving is one of the key contributors to the kitchen's airy aesthetic. Whether or not you have the ability to work with an architect, you can emulate this look at home.

There are a few rules for getting your open shelving to look good. Food and branded items shouldn't be put on display — keep those behind closed cabinets. Above all, a well edited collection looks best.

Start with the shelving.

A LEED Accredited Professional based in New York, John designed the kitchen — and the rest of the home — using limited, high-quality materials, and orienting the space towards the best light and views.

If you don't have the resources to work with an architect, you can buy off-the-shelf, doorless cabinet boxes at Home Depot, Lowe's, or your local home renovation store. These maple cabinet boxes are from Home Depot's Distinctions line.

If you want light and airy shelving but don't want to expose your dishes to dust, glass-door cabinets might work for you. IKEA's $200 Varde Cabinet (available in white or birch veneer) is a popular and reasonably priced option.

Keep things light with glassware.

Keep glassware on display to accentuate the lightness and airiness you get with open shelving. If you're looking for wine glass recommendations, Reidel's glasses are well-rounded and thin-lipped, and you can buy them at Target for around $10 a piece.

They're a good resource for new glasses that look like they came from your grandma's kitchen. Right now, they have hobnail and etched glass in a bunch of different colors — this Hobnail Tumbler goes for $10.

Group collections by color or go with all-white dinnerware.
