If excessive consumption is your thing, watch out for Gracious Home's new store in Chelsea! It's like The Container Store, Bed Bath and Beyond and ABC Home all put together. The store is so tempting, we urge going into this store with great caution.
Like its original uptown location, it's one stop shopping for the house and home set. We put together the slide show above so that you can get a sneak peek. Check out the variety and consider how many SKU's they have under one roof...

Last Thursday night we were blown away with the size and sheer amount of stuff in their new store. Shelves were bulging, the range of categories was mindboggling and - yes - the quality level was very high. It is true, you can walk into this store and buy two nails or a whole Italian bedding set, but what impressed us most was the attention to detail that stores like this rarely display. There are a lot of hard to find items and imported items here, so it makes a good resource for downtown folk.

Chelsea is just getting started. Despite the economic downturn, they're opening another store around the corner in March, which will sell kitchen cabinets and larger fixtures. Check out how big this whole operation will be:
"Gracious Home signed a 20-year, 24,300 square foot lease (17,000 sf street level and 7,300 sf lower level retail) at 55 West 25th Street and Sixth Avenue late last year, in the Chelsea Landmark... the retailer has also signed a 20-year lease for an 18,000 sf design center on two floors at the contiguous 45 West 25th Street."
Yes, that's a total of 42,300 square feet in lower Manhattan!
This is definitely a destination that deserves to be checked out and will be very helpful to many who want a full service store like this downtown, but pack your wallet, because, Honey, this ain't Ikea anymore.

I live across the street and went to check it out. Every square inch is packed with merchandise. They have nice stuff but everything is about 25% more than it would be at another store. I guess you pay for convenience. I will window shop and buy elsewhere.
I looove Gracious Home with a passion. They have unbelievably good service, they are a family owned business and they pay their employees fair wages and health insurance. I leave the store with a smile every time. They are a great resource for advice if you are wondering how to go about a DIY project. I once almost went so overboard by how nice everyone was so as to write them a thank you letter. then I got lazy... ;)
The best thing about GH is their hardward/electrical section. As the above poster mentioned their service is fantastic. They're my default for most DIY stuff--they even rent power tools and sharpen knives. And their prices are pretty competitive on most things, I've found. They don't stock junk, either.
I'm looking forward to checking it out!
How is it that I went, with a list to Blood Bath and Beyond and was unable to purchase several items?
I wish them all the best, but I don't normally buy there because they're way too expensive. For the sake of their employees I hope their formula of being the Neiman-Marcus of home furnishings is successful, especially in this economy.
GH Uptown was always a pleasure. Special Order No Problem. Need to sneak in a washer and dryer into your apt in a plain box no problem. Need curtain rods installed no problem. I gladly pay them whatever they want, as it's always a great experience. The pwner pays above the average treats employees very well, pays health insurance, and most employees are there multiple years..Run and buy here instead of the heartache HOME DUMPO, or the IKEA NIGHTMARE.. Time is worth money
they are expensive, but the thing is: Time is a precious commodity to me, and frankly, GH has solved so many of my homeowner issues in the last 13 years, they are worth the slightly elevated cost on some items (by the way, i don't think they are appreciably higher on the standard items, their margin is on the luxury goods). They have had the best knob selection, always the right vacuum cleaner bags, always the right sized and right looking lightbulbs, tricks and tips to help me navigate my pre-war electrical systems, tons of advice about cleaners and cleaning tools, excellent service on window coverings, always the correct odd sized plumbing item - I could go on and on. The luxury of going to place that has what you need in the correct size is worth it. I can't tell you how many times I went to other mom and pop hardware stores, only to be told that they're out of that size but GH probably has it. Am I going to buy a $1k light there? no. a $300 tablecloth? probably not, but last week, they had a bunch of those in the 75% off bin on the UWS. Would I buy a $300 escutcheon? Yes, if it worked for me. And GH would be the only place in town I could touch and feel that sort of thing.
Love love love GH! Wish they would bring one to Boston!
