Q: I have a 2.5-year-old son, who I'm trying to potty train. I'm doing the naked method at home. But when I go out, or put him in casual care, I have to put a diaper on him. I used cloth the whole time before, but now he pees so much I can no longer use them. So I'm resorted to disposables (compostable). I don't want to use training pants, as they are the same as a diaper, because I cannot find eco-friendly ones. Does anyone know if I can find a cloth pull-up, without snaps on the side? I want him to feel wet if he has an accident so he can tell the difference. I want the ease of pulling them up and down when we go out on errands, so bathroom break aren't a huge production.

I looove Imse Vimse training pants! Here's a link: http://www.simplecloth.com/catalog/item/7272319/7524066.htm
They definitely won't take the place of a diaper, but they will absorb a small accident and help avoid, y'know, wet socks and shoes in the middle of Target! ;)
Bummis makes reusable pull-up training pants and you can search for retailers (on-line and brick and mortar) on their website www.bummis.com. We used them with our daughter but be warned--they don't hold as much wetness as diapers. You need to catch him on the first pee!
Blueberry Diapers makes a really great trainer that we love.

I also got the Blueberry Trainers for my daughter...I'm not sure how they would do if he is a really heavy wetter, but for small accidents they are great.
these have snaps on the sides but a friend told me they work great at holding alot!

My mother in law just brought us a pack of 2 training pants that she just bought at Wal-Mart here in Montreal. Apparently, she used the same kind while training my husband some 30-odd years ago. They feel like padded underwear.
I used Potty Scotty (pottyscotty.com) training pants with my son. They were great and much less expensive than some of the other cloth brands that I looked at.
I love the Bummis trainers, too. Another trick I use is to put a thin nylon diaper cover (the pull-on pants) on top of padded training underpants. Top with fleece pants for yet another water-resistant layer, and you're pretty protected for a couple errands.
We also use the Blueberry Trainers and they are great! They come in fun patterns and colors and fit nicely! When we would go out and about - I added a waterproof cover like there to help minimize the cleanup --

GOOD LUCK!
I just use the Gerber 3-packs from Target. $7 for 3.
Also, maybe you would do better to wait a little longer. I tried to get my son interested in PL for months, and he kept saying, "when I get 3, I will do it." And when he turned 3, he did do it. I started putting him in the cloth trainers. He had 3 accidents in the early days, but nothing since. It's been a month and we're completely out of diapers (except for overnights).
I always heard you could potty train in a day, but you had to pick the right day. So if he's still having accidents, maybe wait a bit and try again.
I used the trainers you get at Target or Walmart. I ordered some from Etsy and there's really no difference unless you NEED designer fabric.
My kiddo could really tell the difference when he had an accident. When I went out I took two pairs of jeans, extra socks and shoes. It took about a week and he was fully trained!
you can check sites like Diaper Swappers and Diaper Sewing Divas to buy secondhand and/or handmade, too.
love our blueberry and imse vimse trainers.
Hanna Andersson ones worked great for us. They actually do hold a good size pee which helps in those early learning stages. They also come in small sizes - it's hard to find them in store for the slimmer ones!
We like the Imse Vimse ones, they have a hidden PUL layer to minimize leaks. If he is still peeing a lot, you might choose the Little Beetle Learners. They fit like a training pant but have the absorbancy of a dipaer. Jillian's Drawers carries both.
If you are handy with a needle, you could try what worked for us... I put a doubler layer (from a prefold, cut up) and a layer of PUL from a diaper cover that was losing its stretch in the waist. Sewed both layers into a pair of big boy underpants, and they turned out cute, comfy, washable, and FREE to me. :)
Hey Tanya Rousseau. I'm in Halifax. Can you tell me the brand you bought. If I cannot find them here I can get my sis to buy it Montreal.
I used cloth for my son and when we started potty training him at 18-months (he was staying dry thru the night) we found he really hated the cloth diapers (which actually helped the whole process) but we had to have something for the longer errands and time away from the house...
The best compromise we found was Nature Baby Care pull-ups. They're a fantastic, very eco disposable. Amazon.com has great prices for them and fast shipping.
He just turned 2 and is out of trainers and pull-ups.
Thanx for the suggestions. I think I'll take a look at Walmart here for the thicker training underwear. I'll also look to see if my local baby shop carries any of those brands or are willing to source them. My son is on the small side and I'm worried if I spend a lot of money purchasing something online it won't fit him. The smallest underwear I found are still big on him.
I do like the look of the MumtazSoakers. And if I try and do it myself at least I know where to start.
I had an etsy seller who makes fitted diapers make some custom pull up ones for me, and they worked great. They worked (like diapers) to catch big accidents in the store, but she felt wet & they were easily pulled up & down for pottying.
Blueberry and Imse Vimse both make adorable training pants. They look like underwear, but have enough absorbency and waterproofing in the stride to catch one accident and save the pants. Both will feel wet and have no side snaps.
Just to clarify, lightly padded underwear "trainers" are best at the later stages of potty learning. If you son is still having big accidents, they'll take out a car seat/couch unlike something with a PUL liner. When we were kids, our parents always used a waterproop cover over them.
Just to follow up a year later,
Cloth diapers + starting training at 18m + cloth trainers = potty trained before or at 2
I guess mom was right.
We used the ones pictured from the Etsy shop during the day along with some Blueberry trainers, which you can often find on sale in their clearance section. For naps, nighttime and going out, we used Bummis with great success! Good luck!
