Location: Portland, Oregon
I'm a SW Florida resident, but I live in Portland during the summer. Adding to the geographical confusion, I'm originally from South Louisiana. We have a way of sniffing each other out — overhearing someone at the butcher's asking about andouille, or spotting a tiny jazzfest flag at an outdoor concert. This has led to a fairly large group of Louisiana ex-pats getting together. Add in the biological peculiarity of a plentiful Oregon crawfish supply in summer (it's winter-spring in Louisiana), and you get gatherings like this…
Oregon summers mean lots of big, beautiful crawfish — an out-of-season treat for Louisiana cooks. For the last decade or so, a group of Louisiana ex-pats in Portland has been taking advantage of this bounty by following the city's Waterfront Blues Festival with a backyard crawfish boil. Add in kids, dates, friends and Louisiana culture aficionados and it gets to be a pretty lively crowd. This year found them gathered in a terraced backyard, boiling bugs right in amongst the raised bed gardens.
Et laissez les bons temps rouler!
We came to pass a good time, and left planning next year's boil.
