One of the more difficult things to organize, especially in a small space, is dress up clothes. Unlike day to day clothes, dress up clothes involve poufy crinoline-lined princess dresses and stuffed dragon tails that take up more room than we'd like. We've got a few organizing tips for you.
- Hang them on wall hooks. My current method of storing dress up clothes is to separate them into 2 batches: one batch is hung up on a caterpillar wall rack. These include things that do better hanging or require more space, like the aforementioned dragon costume. The coordinating helmets, hats and other accessories are hung together.
- Fold them into baskets and bins. The second batch is folded and stacked into a storage basket.
- Make room in a closet Other great ideas for organizing dress up clothes include dedicating some space in a coat or linen closet. You can hang a second rod at waist level so that the clothes are accessible to children. We love this closet with roll-out garment rack dedicated to dress up clothes found over at the Daily Biff.
- Hang them on a coat rack. But if you're not lucky enouh to have the closet space to spare, consider a small coat rack. It can hold quite a bit but takes up very little square footage. You could also use a small clothes rack if you don't mind using a bit more floor space.
- Hide them in a toy chest. If you like the idea of dress up clothes being out of sight when not in use, a toy chest is another great option. Buy something large enough to fit your childs' entire dress up wardrobe. The chest can double as seating in the bedroom or play area.

i have single hooks all around the boys room and hang the nicer costumes on the wall as decorations! We are all very visual and if the costumes were tucked away, I think we'd be less inspired to dress up in them!
Yes, this is the toy-storage problem I have struggled the most with!
I agree that keeping dress-up clothes hung up keeps them more relevant and appealing than putting them in a bin. I have put some low hooks and a bin for accessories in the 'dress up' area, and then made spaces around the house for a few tutu's and masks so my kids are never too-far from a costume. Spreading out the fun makes it easier to find a spot for everything.
I am also ruthless about throwing out the tacky fabrics in favor of things we all find beautiful, like tulle and silk. That way the inevitable overflow into our living area is welcome.

We have made a "corner of the costumes" in the room. There are a coat hanger where to hang it, a bag where to save accessories (shoes, skills,...) and there is also the case with doll's clothes in this corner.
You can see it here: http://dalleuncolinho.blogspot.com/2010/04/rincon-de-los-disfraces.html (and use the translator on the leftside to understand what I tell about if you want)
My husband and I made a dress up storage thing for my daughter's dress up, complete with a rod for hanging dresses, and space underneath that for odds and ends. It works great, and was easy and inexpensive to make! I blogged about it here:

A cute little mini closet from Ikea has done very well for us. Throw in a little rail to hand dresses and some baskets at the bottom for the misc things. Great!
