We held a workshop last night on organizing and the question came up, "How do you organize your junk drawer? All of the items that end up in the junk drawer don't seem to fit elsewhere (lacking a category). So do you separate individual items in the drawer with a container (which would seem like a waste of space)?" Our answer after the jump--and weigh in with your own tips in the comments.
Items in the junk drawer can be grouped together by one identifiable quality--they don't go anywhere else. We tend to want to organize items by function but because these belongings are usually quite random and can rarely be grouped by a defining category, we struggle with how to organize. We suggest organizing these items by size or color. Using drawer dividers, you'll now be able to find items in a jiffy because the items are organized using categories. Make sure to check out Sarah C's and Abby's posts on organizing the junk drawer where they walk you through each step of the organizing process.
