while i think cute switch plate covers are cute...i still can't bring myself to draw attention to them. we just paint them the same color as the walls.

Never really got the appeal of calling attention to a switchplate.

I have a couple switchplates from Anthropologie as well as some simpler ones from Osh. They really do make a difference IMO... It is a really easy, cheap way to add a nice detail to a rental apartment. It just looks so much less cheap than having a plastic switchplate. To me, it's just one of those features that are characteristic of cheap apartments that you can fix really simply, just like drawer pulls/cabinet handles. I don't think they should contrast too much with the wall, but I do think if you choose something subtle and coordinating it can add some beauty to something that is otherwise dull.

Oh, and I wish you could find ones like the third picture in the second row at a standard hardware store - what a great idea. I have a couple outlets surrounded by cords, this would be very useful. Any sources for ones that are sold at chains/online?

I'm with livc on this one, even if it means I'm in the minority. when I moved into my current apartment, one of the very first things I did was buy a bunch of the clear switchplates (like these, although I happened across mine in Home Depot) that are meant to hold wallpaper, and then bought different papers to coordinate with each room. the whole thing *might* have cost me $50 and two hours. I think it adds a ton of character that'll be easy to change back when I move out -- and with any luck, I can reuse the switchplates with different paper in my next place.

(and bizarrely, the paper in my main room is exact the one that's lacquered onto the second switchplate! fortunately it doesn't have that yellowish tinge in person. :)
