Many of our pregnant readers with visions of sugar plums and sub-$150 cribs in their heads were distressed to learn that Ikea had temporarily suspended crib sales last month. The bad news is that their old and beloved crib models are still not back on the shelves. The good news is they have two new crib designs
available right now headed your way.
Astute reader C.B. tipped us off to this news and we're glad to share it with you. We had seen the new cribs in the 2012 Ikea catalog but weren't sure when they would be available to consumers, but that time is
now anybody's guess. There are will be two new cribs to choose from, each priced at $119:
• The Sundvik (which seems like a cross between the Leksvik and Hermelin) comes in two finishes: white and black brown and converts to a toddler bed. (n.b. Ikea has removed these pages and the links are no longer active)
• The Hensvik only comes in white (n.b. Ikea has removed this pages and the link is no longer active). The photo above was the only one on the Ikea website which is strange since it is pictured in the toddler bed configuration, but rest assured that it is a full crib. You can see it set up as a crib in the catalog on pg. 226. Wait a second, you may be thinking, the Hensvik isn't new. Well, yes and no it seems. There was a Hensvik crib but it had solid ends not slatted (see it here, for example) so it seems that this design has been tweaked but still has the Hensvik name.
We'll keep you updated about the status of Ikea's other crib collections and thanks again C.B.!
(Update 8.17.11 I was contacted by Ikea who asked that I update this post to let readers know that these two new crib designs are not currently for sale. I wish I had more information to share with you about when any Ikea cribs will be for sale again in the U.S. but that information does not seem to be available. I want to apologize for any confusion this post (in its original form) caused and any hopes it may have raised. For guidance finding an alternative budget crib, try this post.)
