In a busy, urban setting of this Upper Westside co-op a former superintendent's apartment was turned into a modern oasis for the Zizmor family. A clever means of screening off their open plan living space from neighbors in close proximity, while forgoing traditional window coverings. Rather, they have spider plants, herbs and English ivy to help maintain a sense of privacy.
The connection made between indoors and out with the spectacular porch concept was created for them by Elwell Katzander of Mingo Design. An outdoor dining area is shielded by the plant boxes and the expanse of space is maximized by continuing the horizontal pattern of ipe wood indoors.
