Overlooked Design: Felt Shade Lights by Tom Dixon

Overlooked Design: Felt Shade Lights by Tom Dixon

We here at AT are big Tom Dixon fans. If you search AT for Tom Dixon you can find several great pieces that have been blogged over the years — all displaying his industrial aesthetic which embraces strong, natural materials and simple, thoughtful details. When we came across these felt lamps the other day, we were immediately struck by their materiality, character, and price...

They come in two styles: an elegant pendant and a quirky proportioned tripod lamp (our favorite). The two-tone felt with a grey exterior and white interior creates a dramatic light that feels a little moody yet warm and inviting. While it seems everything is made of felt these days, Dixon's lamps were designed back in 2005 and must have been ahead of the curve at the time.

They are not cheap — at $285 for the pendant and $480 for the floor light — but they are very reasonable if you're looking to invest in real quality. What do you think: over-looked or over-hyped?
