Owen's Soothing, Mint Nursery

Professional Project

Project by: Katie Moore, Olios Design, LLC
Client: Klaya Marie & baby Owen
Location: Old Town Alexandria, Virginia

I recently completed a nursery design for my photographer, Klaya, and I wanted to share it with you. She came to me in 2012 (when she found out she and her husband were pregnant with their first child) and asked if I would help design the nursery (it was a duh, of course moment for me!). From the beginning Klaya had an amazing vision for the space- simple, calm, and sophisticated.

We chose a soft mint color for the walls and added yellows and grays throughout. We opted for inexpensive items purchased from Ikea, Home Decorators Collection, Hobby Lobby, and a few other sources. Some items were also reused (the now toy chest was a storage chest prior). Klaya did purchase a few items from Etsy, to customize the space, like the quilt, which we both agree was a definite must!

From the beginning Klaya and I bounced a lot of ideas off of each other. We started with the vision, then went back and forth, email after email, with links and websites to all sorts of things. We then came up with a concrete budget to decide exactly what could be spent and where it should be spent (it helps to have a designer guide you with this process, in my personal opinion). Then, everything else just started falling into place!

We also chose the large scale dresser so Owen could grow into it. I recommend purchasing some larger items when designing your nursery so your child can grow into them. That way, you aren't buying all new furniture every few years. It's easier (and less expensive) for your child to grow into furniture (like dresser, bookcases, or a closet) than to have your furniture outgrow your child.

We chose a grey tufted club chair with an ottoman (bonus: it came with storage too!) to add a little masculine flare. We looked at a few different options- white, leather, and print, but settled on this solid color (and we are both extremely happy with the outcome).

We opted for inexpensive items, such as the area rug, because then if spills occurred, Klaya didn't feel guilty having to wash it or toss it to purchase a new one.

What I love most about this space (besides the wall decal and fun owl pillow), is the art wall. Owen's baby photo is in the middle and he is surrounded by photos of close family and friends. Klaya actually took most of these photos while family and friends visited after Owen was born.

One challenge we encountered was the length of time some of the Etsy orders took. If you are designing a nursery, I recommend allowing 3-4 months for these orders to be placed and shipped.

I hope you enjoy this space as much as I do (and Owen and Klaya). I want to personally thank my photographer, Klaya for her amazing photos and for allowing me this precious opportunity to help design Owen's nursery! It was a lot of fun!

Thanks Katie!
