Q: My son and daughter are going to be sharing a room. When my son was born, we painted his room yellow, and I made a quilt. We'd like to paint the kids' room a new color, but I'd like it to (a) go with the quilt (b) be gender neutral and (c) not too dark -- the room isn't that big. I'm also making a quilt for my daughter, but it has many more colors in it. Any suggestions?

i'm always a fan of a light grey. looks great with all colors and dark or light fixtures.
You could a light blue. Maybe a little bit lighter than the light blue in the quit since you said the room is small. Light blue can be boy-ish and girl-ish (think Cinderella blue as my very girly daughter calls it).
Good luck, and we'd love to see pics of the finished room.

Thanks.
I would paint the walls ( Navajo) white and do ONE accent wall a bright red. You could hang the quilt on the red wall or let it stand out on it's own on a white wall.
You said the room isn't that big, but if it's large enough to be shared by two then it must be adequate sized and I would not be afraid of using "dark" colors as you say.
Darker colors are very rich and can add depth to a room. Blue in a room is very calming if it's warm. Stay away from baby blues which tend to be boyish and out-dated and "cold." Darker blues are very beautiful and are gender neutral. Check out the latest colors by Benjamin Moore.
Thanks all.
We were intending to move both kids to a different room. We decided to paint the room a light green (Ace Hardware Kindersley).
After all of that, it didn't matter. My son has decided that he wants to stay where he is with the yellow walls. The "green room" will be the play room, unless sharing just doesn't work. If that happens, our daughter will get the green room, and her quilt will look just fine.
