Q: I purchased this sleeper couch a year ago when I was living in a tiny little studio. Since then I've moved into a one bedroom that doesn't quite have the same personality as my last apartment. It's attack of the white-beige-cream gang so luckily I'm allowed to paint. I'd like to keep this couch but need some tips as to what I should pair it with color-wise (paint, accessories, etc) so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb but shines instead. Any suggestions?

white!!! white everything!
oh dear
Maybe a pale yellow, pale green or a medium toned tan?
I could see it working with a dark brown wall. Then maybe go with white and dark brown accessories.
when in doubt - pull colours from the fabric!
1 paint the walls that warm yellow-y colour. 2 teak, midcentury mod pieces would look great with the sofa, as it has a little retro flair itself.
3 go with a rug that has the same, but subdued colour palette.
4 accessorize with white and green (vases, cushions etc.)
hope that helps!
I'd watch some Mary Tyler Moore Show episodes for inspiration.
The beige carpet and vertical blinds leads me to believe that this couch will never 'go' with this apartment no matter what color you paint the walls. Consider reupholstering if you are that attached.
Pale Blue! I'd opt for a something like cornflower if you're looking for something energetic (that color can absolutely glow on the wall) or a more watery robin's egg for a calmer space. Both colors will work well with just about any wood finish, though I'd definitely choose teak over anything else. You can incorporate colors from the sofa in pottery, floor coverings and artwork. Blue + yellow + green = just about foolproof.
Don't decorate around the couch. Paint the walls a color you love and get a cover for the couch.
Espresso walls. A couple of white throw pillows--preferably round and fluffy.
Also, will you PLEASE send a photo once you've finished the room?
I may be the only person who likes your crazy daisy sofa...I say emphasize the crazy and pull the green out..go for the MTM/Rhoda look.
I would try some paint color swatches in dark brown (not too dark) OR the dark green from the couch (NOT the light!!) Find some colors you want to try then throw up a sample of it on the wall behind the couch. Just paint one or 2 walls, not the entire room. As for accessories, I would go with white or cream pillows along with yellow textured pillows. CB2 has some cool ones.
It SHOULD stick out! Paint the walls yellow, orange, lime green, avocado green, blue. White too... It's a freaking awesome couch.
I agree with above. white furniture for the most part...white walls....white furniture. That is a couch that is not supposed to blend. I love it. I love the lines and it would be a good one to reupholster someday. Put color in curtains (solid color...no pattern. if pattern is a must...do something big not busy )and decor items. You could maybe paint one piece of furniture a fun color. But put that piece across the room...you don't want too much together. IT could anchor the other side of the room with color too. Way to keep it. I love it.

Pink! Magenta-ish accent wall.
My vote is for a fresh medium-toned blue on the walls. That way it will look like a field of flowers against a blue sky. :)
Pop it with blue and green accessories. And have fun!
I think it would look particularly hideous with brown/tan walls-- there's no point in attempting a subdued look. If you're going to decorate around a funky couch, commit to it. I'd go with lots of white in the room with some big lime and yellow accents.
Since the main color that pops out on this couch is yellow/yellowish green, I would go with bright navy color for the walls.....
Re: MTM... I think this couch is more Sue Ann Nivens than Rhoda.
Love the couch - agree with the white or blue votes. Would not go brown - I think that would look too dated. Also, maybe throw a rug under it to make it pop? Maybe solid navy blue?
Perhaps you could draw some inspiration from the interiors on Mad Men.

Here's a space that includes a couch that looks similar to yours.

When it comes to choosing colors, I love using Decorpad.com
I wrote up a post on helpful tips here:http://www.dreambookdesign.com/2011/02/tips-on-choosing-paint-color.html
But also, white is always safe and crisp! Hope that helps. PS- love the couch!

I love the sleeper sofa as is and I'm happy that you're not thinking about recovering it with Marimekko fabric or something like that. Keep it groovy!
Gasoline & a match.
I second the idea of using the funky impact of the couch rather than trying to ignore the elephant in the room. I'd go with a punchy gold, chartreuse, avocado or even bold royal or navy blue accent wall right behind the couch and something more tame on the other walls, like ivory. It will instantly up the hipster-quirk appeal. Be sure to add lots of clunky gold-framed thrift-store works to the wall, and something knitted. Et voila - instant Gram-glam.
you could try a bright area rug over the wall to wall. that beige carpet is wretched. couch has some charm but the blinds and the rug do not.
Go green. Not lime green, think emerald green.
The Italians are very good at taking a crazy floral piece and working it into a fun modern space.
Usually all white back drop, then focus on two colors and bring them out so they pop and make sure they are saturated colors more vibrant than the colors in the sofa. I would do a very saturated green and bright yellow. Bring the two colors with pillows, an ottoman and maybe one or two other accent pieces. Don't use brown with this is will be let say matronly. Looks like you have a peekaboo table so off to a good start. You could add some lime green or white pieces of furniture. Some ferns and daisies make it fun. Even a whicker piece would work. This of Palm Springs or Palm Beach 70'

For a cohesive space, select all your colors from the colors found within the fabric of this sofa...
...I think dark brown/dark olive would be great for your walls since that's the color of the dark leaves in the fabric.
I love the sofa, it has tons of personality.
I would pull the colour of the wall from the fabric, I am leaning towards true ochre yellow, but I would suggest definitely getting a few samples and painting a test area on the wall.
Go for it!
Reupholster.
If it was me, I'd do a lovely granny smith apple green. Maybe a shade lighter or darker than the green in the couch, but that would be so lovely with white woodwork...
I have no idea why, but I love the couch. I would love it in a room designed around it. I agree with the above advice to use white for the rest of the room. I hope you post after pics. Good luck!
I say emphasize the crazy color in the sofa. But first you have to figure out what you need in your space. Will you go to this room to feel energized? Or do you want to de-stress in this room? Blues and cool colors will calm you down and brighter colors will pep you up. Think about what you need and choose the colors from there.
I think a couch like this calls for you making a couple of mood boards first.
white definitely!
Oh lord. You wake up to that sofa every day?
I have a funky old couch in similar colors. I plan to have it reupholstered in a solid color one day, but for now the orange, yellow, cream, and green floral is fun. (Not to mention cheap - I got the couch for free!)
I painted the wall behind the couch a bright greenish turquoise. I can't remember the paint name, but it's very similar to the American Apparel t-shirt color "Mint." I hung black and white photos above the couch, and colorful art across from it on a white wall. I tried to find art in turquoise and orange to bring the couch and wall together.
White with an avocado (matched to those green flowers) accent wall behind the couch. Maybe some ornate brass floor lamps or side tables. It's a glorious couch.
I love kitsch. But it can be tricky to work with; the line between fun and “over the top” is easily crossed.
Unless you’ve got some serious design chops, choosing a funky wall color (magenta, lime green, brown, emerald) will take you over the top. If you like the idea of a 70s theme room, then you don’t need to worry about this. But if you want a well designed space that is personal and fun (without being over the top) then go a bit easy on the kitsch factor. A little kitsch goes a long way.
Let the walls be neutral (white), and add interest through an eclectic collection of furnishings, art and accessories. Don’t make the room an homage to the 70s; mix it up. But don’t get too crazy. Include some new things, and some old – from different eras. If you like bright colors, use those in your accessories; orange, blue, and/or cocoa would be nice. But keep your color palette relatively simple.
spinach green. keep any mouldings in the room white.
it always manages to look playful and grown-up at the same time.
oh, and bright white curtains with a little bit of yellow trim or yellow pom-pom fringe.
I vote for a really rich grey and a bright day glo orange accent!! I also think the right muted greyish-blue would work nicely.
... don't do pink.
I think going bright white might work, though maybe less so with the carpet. I was thinking maybe a warmer grey-taupe, that feels a little like the browns in your rug (unless those are also greens) but it might make the space pretty dark (and then you'll need white/light wood furniture, I guess?)
A pretty gray!
white walls, with clear acrylic end tables and yellow ceramic lamps, and lots of varying shades of white (ivory, bisque, bone, snow, etc) pillows and accessories. White coffee table. Green side chair. And a blond wood accent chair.
I retract my earlier vote for pale blue and humbly bow to S.D.'s genius: a bright, true navy would be amazing! Combine that with urbancricket's advice re: accessories and you've got a winner. So fresh.
To those people saying to reupholster, slipcover, etc. Embrace the funk!!
I don't know why, but i keep thinking an eggplant color would really make the couch pop. But that's probably borderline disaster-waiting-to-happen. Haha but that's my take! :) Then again, I think pulling the colors directly from the couch sounds rather..boring.
Another vote for white. See here.
I'm not getting a MTM vibe, but rather the Robert Altman film, Three Women. The apartment Sissy Spacek shared with Shelley Duvall was done ENTIRELY in yellow. This sofa would have been perfect there.
I'm surprised so many people here roll their eyes and take this couch at face value suggesting taking colors from it and going dead-serious period-native with browns and greens. I do agree with white, but also color, red throw pillows to begin with, blue framed art above. Nice example from cheapo.
wow, what a great couch !
i agree with tmoore on pale blue ! and i actually disagree with most of the crew about white. i think having a crisp (but not super bright) color on the wall could really ground this couch, making it feel like part of the personalized whole rather than an object on display.
and after reading some of the other comments i like some of the other various blue/green/gold options too, especially navy and spinach :)
