Q: My fiance and I are moving into a small apartment in Charlestown, MA and desperately need to paint the walls. The space has tall ceilings and three big windows but it only has direct sunlight in the morning. The biggest obstacle in color choice is the (not-so) lovely 1970's mustard yellow stove. I fear that blues and greens will make it stand out too much and colors in the yellow family will clash!

DARK GREY!
charcoal grey!!
nothing green or too blue it would make that 70s stove look horrible. I think its a gorgeous stove by the way - love it!
haha sorry i didnt even read that you already eliminated green and blue! you obviously know what your talking about so be confident in your choice! The walls can take a dark colour and keep the units white.
grey!
Dove Gray, since you said you only have direct sunlight in the morning, otherwise I would be on the dark gray bandwagon.
The cabinets make it look worst than it is. They frame and are such a strong contrast to warmth of the mustard color. If you could cover the doors (paint, paper) then the stove would blend better. Then paint the walls and have some artwork that has a touch of the mustard in it and it should look 100 times better.
We had a similar situation with the mustard-yellow tiles in our bathroom. We decided to renovate entirely before wasting the time, but we found that a cheerful, pumpkin-colored walls would really help everything tie together, and brighten up the yellow of the tiles (think pumpkins with their yellowish-white blossoms). You can then add touches of green here-and-there to bring it all together.
Ah, classic "Harvest Gold" appliances. I'd go with a light shade of gray with some blue in it.
Go on craigslist and look at ovens and talk to your landlord about replacing the gold one with a newer stove. With the trend toward stainless, a lot of people are getting rid of perfectly good ovens.
Maybe you offer to split the cost?
i think a green and yellow palette would work nicely with that stove....trying to blend colors rather than match it. then again i like the stove so
Grey, can be dark or medium. Keep it a warm tone. Add a couple of yellow accessories to the room, such as a vase, dish towels, kitchen carpet. Keep everything else white and silver.
Also, that table would look sharp painted black!
I think the stove is awesome! So much better than a generic white one.... I like the suggestions of light gray or pumpkin. I think you could also get away with a light robin's egg.
Have a look at this post from June last year:
See if you can paint the stove and hood. My old house had an avocado green stove and hood that the previous owner, thankfully, painted. I believe they had it professionally done, and you could not tell it was not the original finish.
Sorry, tried to insert a functioning link. Instead it's been cut off :-(
***AT, inserting a proper link really is difficult here. Please, do something about it!***
OK, again.
In this post from June last year a bathroom with tiles similar in coulor as your stove has been made over: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/bathroom/sharons-bathroom-before-after-good-question-revisited-120622
Sharon added gray, white, lighter and darker yellow. Together with the chrome accessories the after is stunning!
Grey! I agree with previous posters who said grey with some mustard accessories. It would look even better if you could swap out your wooden table set for a white one.
White-and-mustard striped seat cushions with a white table/chairs and medium grey walls would look great, in my humble opinion.
I like the suggestions of gray, but if you really want it to disappear, go with a yellow in a lighter shade...then it will fade into the background of the wall color.
I have the same issue with my bathroom. And spent weeks pulling out my hair trying to find the perfect fabric to make shower and window curtains that would include some of that color. I finally did and for the most part I love it, its mostly pumpkin and greens.
But now I read these suggestions of charcoals, grays and blacks and I know how I am spending my weekend. Not sure why it never occurred to me before as my color palette for the rest of the apartment is based on those colors.
And I love the suggestion of painting that horrid oak (sorry) table/chairs black and I agree with toning down those hospital white cabinets if the owner allows.
Some inspirations for sticking with blue and green...just keep in mind that you'll want to incorporate the yellow color with accents throughout the kitchen, otherwise the stove will always stick out like a sore thumb.

grey!
I would suggest a much lighter version of the gold color of the stove. My home is painted such a color and it is wonderfully soothing. I found that I have that color in most of the paintings and other art work in my house. The gold walls will tone down the color of the stove and it looks wonderful with white (your cabinets).
I suggest using a rich, vibrant color of brown on the wall sharing the stove & a shade or 2 lighter brown on the wall the sink is on. I would also consider a tan color for the cabinets.
'nother vote for grey. Can you paint the cabinets medium grey and the walls light grey?
Not sure I'm on the dark grey bandwagon for the walls. I've really liked the way people have solved the problem of black appliances sticking out like a sore thumb by painting the cabinets around them black, so they blend together. What about finding a cabinet color to match the stove, then go from there? See http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/dc/kitchen/before-after-melissas-budget-kitchen-makeover-good-questions-revisited-132033. Or, paint the cabinets black and the walls a matching mustard? That might be weird: Go to valspar's web site and play around with your digital photo.
Definitely grey, with accent colours of mustard and an orangey red. Paint the table black. It'll look great, with a European air.
I second Paminha; I think a lighter gold or yellow color would blend with the stove (I think grey would just make it pop out).
I'll jump on the the grey bandwagon as well but for the stove. Rust-oleum high heat enamel. Enamels level better than latex's so a micro roller will actually give you a very nice finish. Then if you had your heart set on blues and greens you're not making a compromise.
I think colours with a browny-yellow undertone would integrate the stove into the rest of the room. Something like an avocado green with accents of pale gold and brick red would be a very warm but vibrant combination. The stove wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb but would blend into a complementary palette.
Yet another vote for Grey!
leaf green
I agree with those who say the cabinets are the bigger problem here. They'd be better black.
Since you likely can't change those, I agree that gray (dark or light, I think) is the answer for your walls. And if it were me, I'd sneakily turn that stove more mustardy by tossing around mustard (colored) accents here and there. And yes, paint the table and chairs either white or black.
I love the color of the stove. It's very unique and vintage. Embrace the stove with navy blue walls and light gray cabinets. Use a lot of wood, mirror and chrome accents.
If your renting and want to do minimal painting, you could do a stripe the width of the stove, creating a back splash, then above the cabinets to the ceiling. The color would be and exact match to the stove. So highlighting it, yet hiding it. Then accenting the kitchen with grays to make the space feel modern.
A deep muted plum, not a hum drum as grey.
Some variant of dove gray, for sure.
I think swapping out the green towel and placemats for something more neutral would go a long way, too.
I second (or fiftieth) grey!
i think a browny-grey would look really nice
Mr.Modtomic, thanks a lot! I will save your instructions for sure!
Another vote for dark grey here. If there's nothing wrong with the stove, work with it. We need not all join the stainless steel parade.
Another vote to replace the stove or use appliance spray paint to paint it a different color. It will be worth the trouble and give you greater option to paint the rest of the rooms.
I would use a dark glossy oil paint for the walls. I did it recently in my old kitchen with a similar light problem and looks fantastic. I would suggest you choose green for the area between the white cabinets till the end of the mustard stove, and use green elements around the kitchen. Already it seems that green is one of your favorite colors
Thank you so much for your comments everyone! I think that we are probably going to go with a safe light-medium gray paint for the walls and keep the cabinets white since we are renting and I am not sure how much the landlord would appreciate us painting them a nice exciting color. I am not sure if anyone is actually still looking at this comment page but I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for if we should try and create a "back splash" of sorts between the cabinets and the counter? Thanks again! Once we paint and actually get some more furniture I will submit some updated pictures! :)
Try looking at tin ceiling tiles at your big-box home store.
I agree. Ceiling Tiles make great, reasonably-priced backsplashes.
Replace the stove. You should be able to get a good deal on a white electric stove on craigslist or free on your local freecycle. That way, you can use whatever color you like.
Dove Gray, since you said you only have direct sunlight in the morning, otherwise I would be on the dark gray bandwagon.
