Q: I am going to be painting my boys' room soon (ages 7 and 5). It is currently a dark brown and I am looking to lighten it up a bit. I'm still unsure on the color(s) I will be doing. But my question is this: the room has a large slanted wall/ceiling on one side. The slant is currently white - matching the top ceiling. Do I keep it white? Do I paint it whatever color I paint the rest of the walls? Do I do an accent color on it? Any thoughts and ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Editor: Who else has a slanted ceiling like Emily's? What color is it? What's your advice - to paint or not to paint? If to paint, should it match the ceiling or the other walls?

White Enamel Four-P...
That wall is screaming for a mural! Something cool that could wrap from the wall right onto the slanted ceiling! If you're not into mural painting -- you can look into vinyl wall graphics :)
Hi! I love kids room with atthic like ceilings!!! I woul paint it in a warm, lightful colour but also I would use some wall decalls to make it look fun!!! You can use the shape you want, even make a themed kids room!!! good luck!
Yes, paint it! It slants so low that it is practically the wall.
I have a powder room that has a similar wall/ceiling (although a smaller room) and we painted the walls and ceiling the same color. For a boys room it would be neat to make this a feature wall somehow.
What about doing something like in Cooper and Campbell's room (latest featured room tour). A wall decal or something of that nature might look great without closing it in with paint. Although if you really want an answer to paint it as a wall or not I say paint it. It's more wall then ceiling to me.
Good luck! It's a great room.
me again. Wallpaper might be fabulous. Trees or a cool pattern. I think the wall could be a great feature.
Wallpaper! Ferm Living has some great kids papers.
paint it bright blue!
I think a mural would be wonderful...
or wall decals
or you could just paint it light blue and put glow in the dark stars and planets
I recently read something about making ceilings 'feel' higher than they really are by painting them a shade or two lighter than the wall color. I wonder if the same thing would work on your space? It might lend nicely to the 'light and bright' feel you're after...
paint it like a sky! that would definitely open things up :)
a friend had her similar attic bedroom ceiling painted in wide blue & white vertical stripes like a circus tent with scallops painted "hanging" along the edges. it looked great & the kids loved it.
I would paint the walls and ceiling the same color so the sloped ceiling isn't the focus of the room.
Treat it like you treat the walls, or go a shade or two lighter on that portion. The slant ends so close to the floor in your case that it should be treated like a wall, not a ceiling.
I would paint it the same as the walls, myself. A new, light and bright color throughout will make a big difference in the space.
Definitely paint it like the walls. My initial instinct was like Auramomma's - to paint it and the other walls a pale sky blue to open it up. I like the idea of vertical stripes, too, though. Blue and white vertical stripes?
How about painting the short wall and slanted ceiling one color, then a contrasting color on the other walls. This would draw attention away from the short wall and give it a wrap-around effect. I hope this makes sense...
paint the ceiling and walls all one color. if you paint this like the walls and the ceiling stays white, it will feel like the walls are closing in on you.
I would paint it the green or lighter blue color seen in the comforter, leaving the rest of the walls brown. I personally think a mural would be too much, especially if the bed is going to stay there. You could get a great patterned floor rug that is accented with your color of choice as well to tie it all in together.
Our little boy's room has similarly sloped walls and a very narrow strip of ceiling; we painted it all light grey. Originally, we left the ceiling white, but it stuck out and looked silly.
Don't paint put a decal on it, so that the room still seems open.
I had a room with a ceiling like that when I was growing up...the slant was the same white as the ceiling...but my actual walls were quite a bit higher than these...
I think paint the slant and the ceiling a shade or two lighter than the actual walls, but still with a color.
I just had the opposite dilemma. My daughters room has a slanted ceiling. We had the room painted a very deep grey/ purple and we painted the slats. So when we painted the wall a light to medium grey we changed them white. Our ceiling isn't as deep as yours.
I would leave it white but put a mural on it. When you paint the ceiling it really makes the room so much darker.
I like the idea of a mural and since it's over the bed, how about something like this?

I would paint it all a lighter color. Or go with a slightly lighter shade than the bottom. But I wouldn't leave it white... I wouldn't even leave the ceiling white in this case.
Wow, so many great ideas and inputs! Thank you so much. I'm excited about all the options put out there. Truly, thanks!

where did you get the mattress from?
In my son's nursery I painted the slanted walls and ceiling all the same light color - it really opened up the space and made it look much bigger.
I would paint this wall a few shades lighter than the other walls. How about finding a couple of cool wooden frames, painting them a contrasting color and attaching them to the walls. Then in the center of each frame use chalkboard paint. This way the boys can be a part of decorating their own room.
Not exactly what it would look like, but something like this: http://www.suite101.com/view_image_articles.cfm/248725
My kids have slanted ceilings and we painted them the same color as the accent wall. I think it looks better painted as a wall color.
I have this same problem! XD I'm going to add horizontal stripes to the "slanted wall" and then continue with a color in the rest of the room. Kind of like this:

Maybe you could do off white, light brown, and some sort of light blue?
i love the duvet cover, where did you get it?
We have very similar walls in my son's room (although their is no 'ceiling' they just meet at the apex), we painted them the same color as the lower flat walls, all a kind of light green, and it has worked pretty well. We also used some vinyl decals on them like others have suggested .... I was going to attach a photo, but can't figure out how?
Paint the slanted wall the same colour as the ceiling, otherwise the ceiling will look oddly narrow... I would paint the ceiling a pretty light sky blue, and on the slanted pale blue part put some sort of mural, perhaps a sky with clouds and birds, or a landscape.
If you stick to a light colour, like a pale blue, the room will look lovely if all the walls are the same colour.
Thanks for the post loaded with so many information on wall paint.Stopping by your blog helped me to get what I was looking for.
