There's nothing more gorgeous than beautifully finished wood floors in a home; skinny boards, wide planks, old seasoned wood, pristine new rows--hardwood floors add so much life, character, and versatility to a room. But what if your wood floors are a little worse for the wear, you're on a very tight (read : nonexistent) budget, or (gasp!) you've pulled back that nasty carpet to reveal--plywood!
Painting your floors--even just a painted faux rug--can help you pull together damaged floors, old previously-painted floors, or even plywood. When I uncovered old wood floors underneath carpeting in my office, I was dismayed to find that they were already painted. Even worse, I suspected the paint might even contain lead since they were painted about fifty years ago. Aside from an expensive and possibly dangerous paint removal project, there was nothing for it but to paint over the paint. I added a hand-painted "rug" to throw a little color and dimension into the room, and sealed with it with polyurethane to add a little protection.
In a project from DIY Showoff, homeowners pulled away carpet that was in their bathroom--and painted and sealed the plywood underneath. It's a great temporary solution until they can lay a more expensive floor.
Whether stenciled, taped off, or freehanded, painted designs on the floor can be a beautiful, inexpensive alternative to refinishing a floor. For me, it was also a way to express my creativity in my little office, make it unique--and do it all for under $5.

I love this look. We have a sleeping porch and the wood floor is painted. It was painted, badly (no primer over gloss paint!) before we moved in. Last summer, I repainted it in a better color, and that helped a little with the peeling issues we were having, but it really needs to be refinished.
I originally wanted to sand it and refinish the wood, but the painted floor in there has grown on me, and I'd like to do a patterned floor in there when we eventually have time.
I might be planning on the painted plywood floor on purpose, for the new porch. Would maybe do some patterns, and then have a plain area for working of projects. Too messed up from dye or scuffing - just paint over.
Beautiful...really like the blue and white combo!
I will always prefer to see the wood grain from hardwood floors, but this is a great alternative for an "in the meantime" when the floors are damaged or just plywood!
This is genius for plywood, and the stairs are adorable.
Our hardwood floors seem to have lost their shellac or varnish in a few patches. Any suggestions for refinishing small areas?
Thanks for the shout out! I love our painted floor and it's very durable. The floor shown was done two years ago (the brown and gray stenciled). We just painted an adjoining guest room floor. I got a little more creative with the design and stencil and love how it turned out. Definitely a great low budget/beautiful look.
