Speaking of staying in bed a little longer, we spent the weekend getting some much needed relaxation at a place that was recommended to us by fellow AT'ers. Yes it's in Palm Springs, but for a change there was nothing Mid Century about it:
Korakia is right in downtown palm springs, around the corner from the Orbit In and The Del Marcos. But, not to be cheesy, it feels a world away. There isn't a touch of mid century or the swingin 60's. The furniture is rustic, the architecture Moroccan and the showers made of stone. It felt like being really really far away from everything (which was exactly what we needed). Plus the staff is incredibly friendly, they serve you popsicles when you get there (and they put out fresh mint tea each afternoon) and you can easily check out some bikes to go cruising around the neighborhood. Rates are totally reasonable. Just make sure if you book online to give em a call so that they turn on the a/c a couple of hours before you arrive.

I was just looking at this place yesterday. I'm thinking about going to Palm Springs for my birthday next month, and this looks like a great place to get away.
I stayed in this palce about 2 years ago. Beautiful, but be careful with the AC. We were sweating all weekend because the AC was not powerful enough for the room. No TVs no telephones. Very relaxing. I was also a little disappointed that the mosquito netting over the bed was missing. I booked the room just for that. lol.
We stayed there a few years ago. Avoid the tiny suite in the courtyard. We had no hot water and they had to move us. The walls are very thin. I would like a TV for the prices they charge. It's ok but we won't be back.
I am addicted to Palm Springs. I LOVE the Viceroy (on days when I know it's not going to be full). But looking at these pictures got me thinking it was time for a change...
until I saw the "no TV".

I love the photos, but I'm still shocked by the idea of the desert in July. Why not just drive to Death Valley and stand around?

Palm Springs in the summer. It doesn't get much better if you love the heat and hate crowds. The Korakia is a great getaway and I love that there is no television. Perhaps I shall book a room...
I am from Palm Springs and I do not miss the heat from the summer time. How the 'hell' did I survive July and August out there..oh yeah...stay indoors. Now that I live in San Francisco, I have the opposite happening...very cold summers. I can't win. The Korakia looks very inviting and i love the fact that there isn't a TV. I am almost willing to brave the summer heat to stay there!
I stayed here a few times about 13 years ago, it was beautiful then but looks like they made some nice changes. I remember the owner Doug was very nice and was pouring his soul into the place. The main structure was actually one of the very first structures in Palm Springs where many artist and writers would stay such as Gertrude Stein.
One of the best Albert Frey homes is perched on the cliff right above Korakia.
NO! I'm devastated that more and more people seem to be discovering my secret retreat from Los Angeles. It's under new ownership and has gotten a little "hipper" and the service more streamlined, which takes away some of the lost at desert vibe, but I'll never stop going there.
