Sand Key, Florida
We live in a high-rise condo on Sand Key, surrounded by water. Our balcony is our favorite 'room', and we eat, read, and sometimes nap there — hence the sofa. Our home is beachy-eclectic, with furniture and accessories collected over time and from various sources, including junk/thrift stores, Craig's List, family, etc. We love that every item in our house has a 'history'!
Our challenges are: the salt air, direct sun, sometimes-wind, and the depth of our balcony. We get direct sun 3/4 of the year, until summer when the sun is directly overhead and we get no direct sun on the balcony. It's actually a nice respite!
While our balcony is 40 feet long, it's only 5 feet deep, which makes it tough to create a seating arrangement that doesn't look like a church hall! The two chairs (from a junk store), side-by side, are our favorite reading spot as we can generally get some shade there. The sofa (from Craig's List) is a wonderful napping spot, especially when it's cool outside but warm in the sun :) The plant stand includes some succulents, and you'll notice my herb pot between the chaise and the plant stand. The table is narrowish, and when there are four of us dining I put it against the railing so we can all get a view of the beautiful Gulf of Mexico.
At night, the lights below twinkle and it feels magical. We've even taken the inflatable air mattress out there to drink wine and spend a night! This is our little piece of heaven, from which we can watch cars drive over the bridge, the sun set, and the dolphins and stingray play. We have made many happy memories here, with friends and family.
