There are a few "events" on the Apartment Therapy editorial calendar that are marked with a big red circle. One of them is the launch of the new IKEA catalog each August and another is the announcement of Pantone's pick for "Color of the Year", which the community always likes to weigh in on. Well, today is the day! Drumroll please - the color of the year for 2012 is....
According to the official announcement, the deep red-orange color is intended to give us all a big energy boost; a refresh and a recharge. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Institute tells us more about the choice for 2012:Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it. Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.

I think this is a highly-usable color for interiors. It's very easy to incorporate into a room as an accent, although the full wall treatment (as shown above) is absolutely an option for those willing to take the plunge, as it can be easier to coordinate with than reds with a cooler, blue tone.
What do you think of the choice? Are you ready to try the "tangerine tango"? Let us know....

Shaw's Original Fir...
It looks almost the same as the 2011 color to me.
I hate having to spend New Years Eve and Day painting my apartment to match the color of the year. At least this time it shouldn't be more than 2 coats to go over the Honeysuckle we put on last year. I remember putting Mimosa over the Blue Iris was 4 coats, 5 in the lighter rooms.
@Funstraw- please tell me you're being sarcastic... seriously? Painting to match colour of the year?? LOL I can't even imagine. I'm still in love with turquoise.
I fear it may provoke seizure activity. Who is Pantone and why should we care what they think? Are they famous in some way?
Aside from that I always do love my daily fix from AT!! Like a pleasant oasis. So thank you!!
Absolutely LOVE the color....which will make one of my friends go crazy, as I have been wearing this form of color this fall. Great ideas on how to use in rooms/and with other basic colors. YES!!
Im going to live like its 2010 for a bit more... I Love the trends, but The turquoise Just Makes me so Happy!! ... Love your blog.. always!
Vanessa
It doesn't look the same on my computer. I just painted everything grey. I'll just buy an orange pillow. :-)
Ha...guess what color I painted my desk 2 months ago? Yup...deep reddish orange. It's called persimmon by C2 and I actually goofed b/c I thought it was going to be more red, but hey I'm ahead of the game ;).
@rkpteden OMG. Who is Pantone?? Please read: Pantone is the world-renowned authority on color. For more than 45 years, Pantone has been inspiring design professionals with products, services and leading technology for the colorful exploration and expression of creativity. Pantone created an innovative system for identifying, matching and communicating colors to solve the problems associated with producing accurate color matches in the graphic arts community.

Ho-hum!
Who cares?! So what!
When I moved into my apartment 3 1/2 years ago, I painted one large accent wall that color. Made me claustrophobic and mad every time I sat in my living room - I just didn't have the space or lighting to pull it off. Just repainted it grey and what a relief! Still love orange but only using as accents in my place.
I painted my bedroom that color a few years ago and LOVED it. Lots of white moulding for contrast, but it really did energize me.
The kitchen in our apartment was this colour, for the past three years. We moved out recently, but I have to say, there's something refreshing about all white walls and big windows, that our old place didn't have.
LOVE this color. Really disliked Honeysuckle and thought it an odd choice.
I love it! But as comments here attest, this is a color often best approached in small bites.
Hah, the place we just moved into has a blue and white tiled bathroom. Its cute, and very vintage, but I'm not crazy about blue and didn't want to go matchy matchy when it came to anything I put in there. I bought a small dresser and painted it this exact color on a whim...I think its called Tangerine Sunset? Its a surprising mix with the sweet vintage tile, but I get so many compliments on it.
I'd paint my front door in this red orange. Wearing a dress this color is flattering too.
Love it! I recovered the seats of my MCM dining room set with this shade of naugahyde.
My jaw literally dropped to the floor that people don't know what Pantone is or care. It is like... 90% of my workday going through Pantone's color books. I am totally feeling this orange! I just put a bunch of this kind of orange into our color cards for next release :)
I totally had a feeling it was going to be an orange! :)
LOVE it.
Yummy. I think we'll do a Core light in that.
www.v2lightinggroup.com
I love the color of the year! (@hthiessen - DITTO!)
It looks very coral to me, which we saw a lot of leading out of summer into fall this year. I'm excited to see it used throughout 2012.
I like it. I can imagine it in the kitchen or as a lipstick. :)
I get it if you don't know who Pantone is, but why are you reading this blog if you don't care? I personally love the 2012 color, but would only say that this year Pantone seems to be following instead of leading on this one. I've already seen this hue all over the place, including being prominently placed in J.Crew's current fall and winter collections.
my house is going to be so fashionable in 2012! it has a lot of orange in it already... :-)
Love! I recently painted my living room teal so I think it's the perfect contrast color.
happily, when I opened my pantone gift this morning to discover the color of the year, it already matched my Eames chairs! Here's a pic: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150396276756863&set=a.10150202441376863.310806.526596862&type=1&theater
It looks like a very coral-y orange, and the exact shade of a tangerine I'm eating right now. I'm interested to see how it compares to Industrial Orange (a standard in MCM decor as well as the color of the Golden Gate bridge), or Charlotte's Locks, a paint color released by Farrow & Ball for 2011.
I love this color - so vibrant. Makes me want to push myself towards Type A tendencies for 2012.
I love finding out Pantone's color of the year. It's just fun. :)
I'm with @clairunderwear. This is oh so close to last year's color, albeit a bit brighter, that I really wonder if this has wider significance. Is 2012 going to be more of the same as what we have now? Will we just be putting on a bit of a cheerier face with no substantive changes? And perhaps our problems will be getting hotter. turned up a notch? Do I need something more interesting to occupy my mind?
I'm psychic! This explains my recent inexplicable lust for orange socks (I bought some from American Apparel). It's actually not my very favorite color, but I'm tired of blues, grays and greens. It's a great accent color.
bring back turquoise
Sweet! My coat is this color and I love it.
I love red-orange. Love!
I'm so 2010, though I've been addicted to 2009 lately. Not so sure I can incorporate 2011 and 12 into all my blues, grays and yellows though...
Love it, I think Honeysuckle was a bust. Didn't see much of it.
LOVE it.
I like kushkush's idea...but instead I think that Pantone is saying let's take a fresh look at something that has been around for a while and adapt it to our lives in new and interesting ways.
not sure it affects my lifestyle much, but i love the color!
whoever said orange is the new black was seriously disturbed.
what's with saying the color is the same as 2010's color?
That was pink. this is orange. Big difference.
(especially for those of us who hate pink!!)
When I got divorced (2008) and had my own place, gravitated toward orange and red. I think I wanted warm happy colors around me. So, yeah, kushkush, I think you're onto something. This fall, in a new house, feeling inexplicably drawn to deep blues, which formerly left me cold. Not sure if I'm ahead of the trends or behind them. Don't really use them to make my choices I guess.
Much better than that 2011 monstrosity.
Boring. I've a Rachel Pally dress in this color but that's only because the other color option was sold out and I knew the dress would look great on me. Otherwise, I hate this color and would hate to be in a space painted this color.
Might as well make the color of the year brown.
Love orange. When I was younger I hated it, now I can't get enough. *happy!*
I was also surprised that someone wouldn't know Pantone, but maybe those of us who work in the design or print industries take it for granted.
Love this color. I bought a jacket this color a couple years ago. I must be ahead of my time!
My favorite color! (and no, not because I started liking it after reading the JCrew catalog, I mean forever my favorite).
LOL @ jennaanne "whoever said orange is the new black was seriously disturbed." great quote.
Love the new color I'm sure I will find some place to bring it into my home and wardrobe this year.
OMG! This is hilarious. Are people really repainting their places because someone says it's trendy?? You pick colors because they compliment what your house looks like and what's in it, not because Pantone said so. Silly rabbits.
My Capricorn self is not digging the deep orange. I'm one of those people who can appreciate something this bold in other environments, but would never be able to pull it off myself. My big bold move this year was to stray outside the neutrals and go for pseudo-neutral navy blue bedding.
As for Pantone - I didn't learn who they were until I started working with graphic designers, so I can see how many people might not know what they do. Of course, there's no excuse for ignorance with Google on your side.
Looks similar to the color CB2 has been using to me.
Gah. Isn't "honeysuckle" yellow, not pink? Isn't "tangerine" orange, not red?
I LOVE THIS. Unfortunately, my apartment is suffering from a bad case of color schizophrenia. My DH's couch is pure 2008 purple, the damn floor is army green--ok, orange pillow, coming up. Maybe we should just go with the clash of preferences.
Love love love It! I agree with other comments here, this orange is leaning into coral for me. Which I like, because I can't wear a true orange bit I look great in coral (I'm a warm-toned blond). I also agree that last year was pink people, completely different IMHO.
I would like it if more examples could shown of this color working with bile's as mentioned in the article. May've a follow up story?
Thanks Apartment Therapy for keeping us current!
Oh and ps, check out the great red-orange paisley flannel sheets at Cuddledown.com, perfect compliment for this trend!
I'm crazy about this color for interiors. It's also a color I love to wear. It goes swimmingly with certain blues and greens. Not to mention brown and gray. It's not exactly an Hermes orange, but close. And, we know what a perennial favorite that is.
Just this morning, on one of the shopping channels, a handbag in this color was the first to sell out. Darn it.
Sorry, that was "blue's" - darn that auto-spell checker!
Just bought a new ottoman after looking all year...not only 50% off but this colour! Feeling smug now.
@lynell: bingo. It seems like this is a design industry thing, as an engineer who loves design, remodeling, etc...I've never heard of it outside of these exact AT posts.
@emilybeth: Really? So if you don't know about this particular company or give a crap about the color they decide represents a year you shouldn't read a blog about decorating your home? Those two things are not somehow mutually inclusive.
I love home design and style but I still don't care what Pantone is or what they do. For the record that color is not for me, but I guess my opinion on this public blog doesn't matter because I don't care what Pantone is all about.
@sagekitten85
Tangerine is orange-red. Blame your monitor. I know my monitor isn't set to display accurate colors. (Or maybe kenneth cole's photography is that bad, I dunno.)
Darn, I have had this color on my large wall for three years and just decided to repaint. I really love it but needed a change. Going black and white for a total change.
@sagekitten85
Also, you've missed the "why is honeysuckle pink" discussion by a year.
I love this color! It's warm, it pops, and it's classy. You can find it in a lot of different things and it's a lot more gender neutral than last year's color.
Love the color, but there are a lot of reds pretty close to it that I don't love, so it's actually a narrow band. It does look great with teal and turquoise, but the cooler colors should prevail!
Pantone may or may not matter to you, but they do matter to the designers of industry, so you will see lots of merchandise in their trendy colors each year, like them/it or not. These announcements are a heads up for people who do want to know what to expect on the market. I design polymer clay jewelry, so this color might be part of my palette this year, for instance, since there will be garments out there featuring the color...
Also known as chinese red.
I love seeing what the hot new color of the year is. As a designer it influences my choices in releasing new colors for my jewelry and gives me a hint about what current colors may not sell as well this year.
I love this color and think it would pair well with the turquoise...
HATE 2008-2010 colors. Tangerine Tango looks somehow dated on the walls, but would look excellent as a desk, pillow, etc.
Thank God.. the readers of this website aren't the decorating sheep Pantone hopes we are!
Gross color in large amounts..
Totally agree with the majority of commenters - great for clothing and room accessories, but a little overwhelming for the "whole outfit."
I love the color. The economy is hitting us all hard, and this is a color that you can use in little pops and it looks great with many color schemes. I can see using it to refresh a room or a wardrobe and not break the bank.
Love this color: in my garden for many years, my wardrobe recently, and very, very recently I made 3 throw pillows that capture it perfectly (particularly love it with the grey-brown shown in this post). I posted up a few flowers and picks of the pillows here (not sure if links are allowed though...) http://gardentherapy.ca/2012-colour-of-the-year-tangerine-tango/.
This color is so foul. I feel sorry for the people deluding themselves into thinking it looks good on them. Nobody looks good in this color except maybe Iman.
I just bought Pompei red sheets, etc. and a chair the same color, which look like 2012 on my monitor. The chair is on an antique kilim with a very similiar orange, natural white and a natural indigoish color. Who knew that what I loved would be so fashionable?
My kitchen walls in my 1919 house have been this exact color (with white trim) for eight years, and I'm still not tired of it. Love, love, love.
Sorry, ew.
Orange-red is slightly evil. It makes me look sallow and ill... Truly not a fan.
Now a nice true red or blue-red... LOVE
Oh, for the good old days of 2010! Viva 15-5519 TCX! Turquoise and charcoal, turquoise and pink, turquoise and yellow . . . yum, yum.
Pantone, Pantone, Pantone.... You should have had another cup of coffee before choosing. Orange is such an oppressive color, very few people can carry it off to wear it. It makes their skin look sallow and yellow. For decor, it is garish, but I do want to thank you. You will save me so much money shopping since I would never buy anything done in this horrible color. What a way to further dampen the struggling economy. Few enjoy this color for apparel or decor.
ITA, studio57!
Thank you for your comment @funstraw you gave me a good laugh.
I've been using this color for years! I swear by it: it's the perfect accent color. I have a blanket this color that I got on a study abroad trip in college. Been in love ever since!
I Love It. But I have been calling it Tomato Soup red.
All of these colors are fun, but I am stuck in 2009 I guess? I just adore that vintage mustardy yellow. It goes SO well as an accent with a monochromatic pallete. One of the houses I'm working will have accents of this pantone yellow on the exterior with base colors in white and dark grey. LOVE that combo! However, this hot orange/red could fit right in too with the grey and white. :) I just think the yellow reads more classic- think yellow wellington boots or an old rain parka and somehow I feel the orange/red is more trendy?! I am a lover of orange, but maybe I'm just a bit worn out by it? It has been the thing for a while, no? Maybe it's an Atlanta thing?
Yuck.
I like it! But I've actually liked all of them so far, especially Mimosa - I love bright, warm colours, and Blue Iris and Turquoise are warm enough that I quite like them.
Actually, I think they all work pretty well together!
Tangerine Tango and the rest are pretty, except Honeysuckle since I dislike non-orangeish pinks. Clear, saturated color accents against crisp white energize me emotionally like oxygen in air does physically. They look great in sun shine.
This orange-red cocktail is a perfect shade for home accessories and apparel that will appeal to women and men alike!
I have a wall of my living room painted this color. Beware though, while it's fun, it can easily become overwhelming!!!
Ah, nice and retro. Frank Sinatra's favorite color was , reportedly,orange-red (go figure). I remember my aunt painting her bedroom this color, a bright tangerine, back when I was a kid, around 1964 or so. I thought it was so exciting and it is still a bold, vibrant color choice. I would not do an entire room though.
I love it! Its such a juicy colour. I like a nice white wall like anyone else but sometimes you just have to live a little and unleash your inner orange.
That said, I don't necessarily feel it necessary to abide by the colors of a season/year, even if it is dictated by Pantone (if you're in a business that's another matter).
I love it, but I always love orange.
In hindsight, do you think Pantone was on track with its 2011 pick?
Fuschia doesn't really come to mind when I look back over the past year; I think citrine and grey were the big colours.
LOVE. IT.
Well last year's color and this one explain why it is nearly impossible to buy a cherry red sweater this Christmas! Yuck!
It's pretty hot.
I am such a coral fanatic. From deep dark orange red to the lighter shades, I've always loved it.
I painted my kitchen in a very similar color when I moved into my house last year. I smile every time I enter that room!
Can't wait to be able to buy stuff in this color this year!
1. I'm with everyone whose heart skipped a beat on realizing that there are people out there who don't know who Pantone is.
2. Aw, I'm going to miss Honeysuckle. (To those who say this isn't very different... I have nothing constructive to say except that, to me, this is WORLDS different.)
3. While I prefer Honeysuckle as a design color, I'm super into Tangerine Tango-like lipstick at the moment.
Ok, I know, roughly what Panetone is, because I worked newspapers and those were standard color protocols.
For those who got in a twist that some people don't work in design ( you know, your patrons and customers), I hope never to hire you. I don't like working with mean snobs.
As for the color, I personally don't resonate with it. I do know people who could rock it.
My mother's diningroom was painted that color in 1960. It was very trendy in Pittsburgh, PA at the time. I find oranges hard to live with. They don't evoke good emotional responses in most people. Remember the oranges of the 70s?
Saw it coming back in September 2010... http://askpatrick.blogspot.com/2010/09/trendspotting-at-nydc-color-stories.html
Looks like the variopinte dish color on sale at dwr
I love it! I am currently on a coral and aqua quick ,along with browns...I say bring on the Tangerine Tango :)
Love the 2009 color, especially for kitchens. Thanks for this post; very interesting. I enjoyed reading the various responses, as well.
Great accent color for the currently vogue gray walls.
I've found it takes about 2 years for color of the year to reach as consumers. If you notice, there is a ton of turquoise in the marketplace now; next year we'll likely see the honeysuckle. Fun, fun, fun!
Thiessan...surprising to me too..
I have a very small end table in my study that's Tangerine..a little bit more red than this buy it looks amazing and vibrant situated between a mintish grey table, grey and swiss coffee walls. It's an excellent choice for the pacific northwest in this season as well. Think ill make a throw pillow in this color...
Love your comment mrspeel.! Nice trip down memory lane...
Funstraw won the thread, so now I'm laughing too hard to think about the color. 8D Seriously, though, it's nice, but I think it's more suited to my next nail polish than my interior.
Hmmmm. Just painted my home office an icy blue. WAS going to do the closet in an exploding yellow, perhaps I'll go with this mind-altering orange.
Then I am bang on with the trend, actually, I am waaay ahead of the trend. I introduced very bright, very reddish orange to my house 2 years ago. It is a wee bit less red than the one shown here (but then again, it may look different on a different monitor) but it is an orange with lost of red in it. I love it.
LOVE it!
I was actually thinking about this earlier this week. I was predicting (to myself) that it would be a silvery gray color. Wayyy off.
Just no. Besides, I'm stuck with the pink tub for a long, long time.
I love this color! Like @lauraprescott, we call this Tomato Soup (with a touch of milk). It's delicious w/ charcoal grays or a Weimaraner-dog-gray-brown. I use it as an accent--never a whole room.
@Girl and Lamp: 'Tis true--this color looks very good on brown and black complexions. I love it in scarves and tops.
Had this color for 10 years just painted it white.
That is my favorite color! Apart from wall colors, I would love to have all my accessories in that color!
This is my favorite color!
Years ago I was serving on a pro-bono committee with a somewhat condescending professional printer. Not knowing I was a graphic designer by trade, he asked if I work with PMS (Pantone Matching System). I so badly wanted to say 'oh yes, I work at all times of the month.' But I was polite and held back.
