Paper towels - so useful, yet so UNgreen for the most part.
We cut up some very old white bath towels into paper towel size sheets and have been happily using them instead of paper for most jobs, although we still keep some paper towels on hand for when we really feel like we need them.
We decided to search and see what we could come up with as good alternatives:

It seems like the only time I use paper towels is when the cats throw up and I think that's the only thing I want to clean up cat vomit with.
These are a great substitute for paper towels. They're about the same weight as a really nice hefty paper towel, and so much softer. I got a pack of 30 at Bed, Bath & Beyond for $5, which works out to just under 17 cents per towel.
