There are plenty of philosophies about how best to teach reading preparation, but what's not up for debate is that letter familiarity is essential. Playing with letters from an early age often helps foster this awareness. That's why we love this beautiful printable alphabet from Digitprop.
While these paper letters won't be the most durable toys on the block, if you use cardstock you could make them playable. Each letter represents an animal, person or thing whose name starts with that letter (think "astronaut" for A or "rainbow" for R). Or, print out your child's name and use them as unique decor.

Shaw's Original Fir...
very cute! love that they free printable downloads!
I love this but would prefer to buy in book form like "Papertoys Monsters." We've had a lot of fun with that one and there is no way that home printing will live up to the colors above. A book is probably cheaper than high end color printing.
Ha, well... But everything's up for debate in the parenting world! In steiner schools they avoid letter familiarity until age 7, but when they do begin teaching letters it's just like this, with characters and stories.
