Name: Patrick & Hyatt
Location: Kensington, Maryland
Size: 3200 square feet
Years lived in: 21 (11 since renovation to present configuration)
Patrick and Hyatt became empty-nesters went their second daughter left for school, and they quickly saw a need to declutter and repurpose their house to accommodate new needs. They contacted Emily Prugar of M House designs to help them redesign on a budget over the course of a year.
The challenge to Emily was first to streamline the home office now that the girls are away at school. The room was a stashing room for old furniture and projects, but Emily turned it into a space for desks for both Patrick and Hyatt, and for a reading corner. Now both of them can work in the space and enjoy the view out of the windows.
Emily was also tasked with redoing the girls' rooms while sticking to the paint choices that they had chosen when they were young—to honor their choices and make them feel welcome when back at home.
The project then extended to all the rooms in the house. Emily helped choose paint colors and a few furniture choices for the family room and kitchen. The highlight of the project was pulling Hyatt's Chintz China out of storage and into the light. Most pieces were put into display cases, but some Emily also hung on the wall.
She then helped Patrick and Hyatt edit, change light fixtures, upholstery, and rugs throughout the house. The couple says that "Emily can perform miracles with very little"—a true testament to the power or rearranging, editing, and updating for a fresh look with less.

does anyone have any good recommendations on how to hang plates like this on a wall?
Corduroy, do you know they make plate hangers? I assume that's what's used here. (not being snide if you're looking for an alternative to plate hangers)
lol, i have the same ottoman from Ethan Allen.
love the blue color on the walls with white windows.
The red couch looks very comfy!
LOVE the Chintz China! I can't believe it was packed away. It adds such a nice touch of color to the rooms. The blue color is very pretty too.
Martha Stewart has instructions for making your own plate holders too. I have made these and used pre-made ones and think they both work equally well--except on square plates, then make your own. Trust me. http://www.marthastewart.com/272957/wire-plate-hangers
Perhaps some "before" pictures would put this all in perspective....It's hard to appreciate the huge difference rearranging and editing has made in this home without seeing what it looked like before. Let's keep in mind, 3200 square feet is a LOT of house to decorate. I really like the color in the office.
I would have liked to see the before pics, especially after seeing that this was done by a decorator.
I like the dining room and kitchen. The house does look cleaned up and clutter free, but to me a way overboard on the textured wall colors, and then on top of that not even have all the walls the same color. Just too much.
I absolutely love the storage by the staircase though. that is inspirational.
Like the plates on the wall.....confused abt the enormous red couch...seems way too big for room and second sink in island??
The kitchen is nice, but I am not a fan of the bedroom with the yellow bedspread, and the yellow and blue couch with the aqua-ish walls. It looks too 1990s for my taste.
Rebecca_South, I did know but I'm always so weary of hanging things up on our walls being that some of the walls in our house are plaster and some are sheetrock. I figured I'd throw the question out to the AT community for some additional options. Thanks.
Beautiful house. Would like to see fresh flowers in the kitchen, just to add some color. Love the plates on the wall. The girl's bedroom is very cute !
Emily was a designer where I work before she struck out on her own. She has a wonderful sense of color and space. In this instance she shows how to give her clients what they need within their budget and desire to maintain certain aspects of their home for sentimental reasons.
I know the designer personally and I believe she only did the Office in this house. She always does such fanastic work! I think she's been written up a few times in AT. Great Job Emily!
this is actually my parents house and I'm the second kid to move out. on some
of these comments I've seen you guys are criticizing the choices of furniture and paint? Emily is an amazing decorator, but she is going to be working within someone's already existing style, which is exactly what she did for my parents. and for the record, about the "too 1990s room" I was born and raised in the 90s. that was a special time for our parents and besides 90s style rocks so quit complaining. And the red couch in the basement actually fits perfectly. a lot of these photos seem deceptive of size. overall, Emily thankyou for making my parents house a haven for them and thief style they r so in love with their home now!
also to the person above me she did literally every room in our house, so. isk where you got that from
